Superman: Legacy it will not explore the character’s origin story. This was confirmed by James Gunn, after being consulted by a follower on a social network about the narrative arc that he would address in the production. Although he did not go into details, his revelation reinforces the sense that the filmmaker wants to give to the DC Extended Universe.
Although the premiere of Superman: Legacy It is scheduled for 2025, it may be that during the next few months, until we have official images, more important details will be known. To a large extent, this has to do with the informative nature of James Gunnwho from time to time leaves a guide about his projects on social networks.
This time he did it through his Bluesky Social profile. As on Twitter, it is common to see how James Gunn answers some questions related to his film work. In recent months, these have been focused mainly on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Superman: Legacy.
Superman: Legacyby James Gunn, continues to take shape
At the end of last year, James Gunn took over, along with peter safran, the creative direction of the DC Extended Universe. Both, since then, began a strategy that will have as its first own project Superman: Legacy. At that time, there was no title for that production and when it was announced it was not known who could direct it.
However, as the months passed, news arrived. The most important was that James Gunn would take over directing the film, as well as writing the script. This explains why his followers on social networks are encouraged to make statements like that of the user Eric Metelka, who wrote to him: “Please use the first two pages of All Star Superman [un cómic, publicado entre 2006 y 2008] like his origin story in the movie.”
Given the idea, James Gunn responded as follows: “I think we have seen enough of its origin in the cinema”. From the beginning, the filmmaker has insisted on the goal of giving the character a twist in relation to recent adaptations. Gunn wants a powerful Superman, yes, but also one close to the citizens. He also desires an intimidating figure, however this should not make him unfriendly to the naked eye.
What might it mean to skip Superman’s origin story?
It is not the first time that something like that raised by James Gunn happens. Perhaps the most recent and popular example is Spider-Man from Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Without needing to address his origin story, the character was introduced into the narrative naturally. In this way, information was omitted that, most likely, has been known from the outset by the majority of the public that has approached the productions of that franchise in recent times.
A similar story can occur with Clark Kent in Superman: Legacy. Dispensing with that background opens the door to the possibility of spending more minutes building the character in the narrative time that James Gunn wants.. On the other hand, it can be understood as a declaration of principles, as if the filmmaker told the audience: “You already know this. Now I want you to know my vision of this figure.”
That vision will star David Corenswetwho was recently confirmed in the starring role, along with Rachel Brosnahanwho will play Lois Lane. Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
