Italy has taken the world by surprise by imposing a blockade to ChatGPT. The Guarantor for the protection of personal data (GPDP), its regulatory body, accuses the OpenAI chatbot of illegally collecting users’ personal data, and of not having the tools to verify the age of the people who use it. In addition, he opened an investigation against the company led by Sam Altman.
«The Guarantor for the protection of personal data ordered, with immediate effect, the provisional limitation of the processing of Italian user data against OpenAI, the American company that developed and manages the platform. At the same time, the Authority opened an investigation,” the regulators’ announcement states.
As the text of the GPDP indicates, Italy has sent the order to OpenAI to suspend the processing and collection of personal data of users located in your territory. The decision has been made after the recent confirmation that the US company’s chatbot exposed sensitive information from ChatGPT Plus users.
