So it’s estimated that around 200,000 undocumented immigrants try to enter the United States every month, recent government records show.
The backpack for migrants
It was through a video on TikTok that it was revealed that a group of Industrial Design students from Ibero in Torreón created a special backpack for migrants, which according to them is inspired by these people.
The video that has gone viral and that has sparked a great debate in networks, shows the backpack that people who want to get to the United States and who are with children who “get on the train” must use, and even for those who have to sleep outdoors.
“It is a backpack created for the migrant community that travels from Central and South America to the border with the United States and Mexico. What we are looking for is to lighten the way, but above all that they do not feel alone”, explains one of the young people who generated the project.
According to the backpack presented by three students, it is white and is not of the conventional design, since it has three handles, because it is designed for “families” who take the train with children. It also has a vest for greater ease “when running.”
In addition, the product has a fanny pack that detaches from the backpack, and a reflective strip that helps migrants “find themselves in the dark, but they do need to be a little more discreet, they can cover up so they don’t stand out.”
The backpack is delivered with a user manual, “so that they have the proper care and a storytelling of how this will be their new travel companion and how it will help them.”

“When the backpack is inside empty, apart from being where they take it, due to the padding it has, it can function as a pillow, which, well, can help them in case they need to sleep outdoors,” the students explain.
As expected, the video originally shared on the @vida_IberoTorreón Tiktok account sparked criticism on social networks, where the digital pulse has criticized the product and has even cataloged the student project as a mockery.
“I couldn’t tell you if the girls did a study for the product, this happens when privilege often blinds you to what you think certain people need, it becomes a misdirected idea,” says one of the comments.
“The bib lacked being a float for the wild river”, reads another comment.
“I don’t see the problem and I need to understand, why are people bothered by that? If you ever listened to someone who had to migrate, you would understand many of the needs they mentioned”, reads another comment.
Thanks to the comments of Internet users, it was also revealed that it is not the first time that students of said university in that town create projects designed for migrants, as an example in 2016 other university students presented clothing for migrants.
This information is shared by Ibero on its websitewhere they explain that this is part of a project linked between the IBERO Social Action and Training Directorate and the Jesuit Service for Migrants, whose objectives were to raise awareness among university students about the problems of this group in transit and their responsibility to act in this regard from their area of knowledge.
Likewise, on that occasion, the university authorities pointed out that the idea of the backpack that turns into a sleeping bag arose from seeing that migrants who visit the shelter usually request garbage bags, which they use to enter them at night and thus lessen the cold Therefore, 300 pieces have been made, which were delivered shortly to the shelter.
