Podcasts have become one of the most popular entertainment methods. However, even before they took flight, Apple already allowed us to listen and download our favorite shows from your Podcasts app. This comes natively integrated into iOS, iPadOS, macOS and even a web version.
Although the application works like a charm and has a fairly intuitive interface, it has a problem that is sometimes difficult to solve. Said problem is automatic downloadswhich start without us realizing it and could eat up part of our monthly data plan.

In a few simple steps you will be able to start listening to your programs without the fear of them downloading in the background; something that will not only end up affecting your data consumption, but also your internal storage.
How to turn off automatic podcast downloads on iPhone and iPad
To turn off automatic podcast downloads on your iPhone or iPad, just make sure you follow these steps below. This procedure consists of two partsone in the Settings app, and one in the podcasts app itself.
First part
- open the app Settings of your iPhone.
- Here, go to podcast.
- In section downloadsdeactivate download on save. Also, you can activate Delete played downloads to automatically get rid of podcasts you’ve already listened to.
- Then look for the section automatic downloads.
- deactivate activate on follow. Optionally you can also disable Allow by cellular network. By turning off the latter, your iPhone will no longer be able to download the episodes via data, so you will have to connect to a Wi-Fi network if you want to do so.
Once you have disabled the above, Podcasts app episodes will no longer download automatically. However, it is likely that you already have some downloaded on your iPhone or iPad and do not know how to delete them. Just follow the procedure to clear your storage of audios that you no longer use.
Second part
Very well. Now every time you subscribe to a new podcast channel, the podcasts will no longer be downloaded automatically. However, those to which you are already subscribed they will start downloading content every time they upload a new episode.
Unfortunately, Apple does not include a control for this option within the Settings menu. However, you can control it from the Podcasts app. This procedure can be somewhat cumbersome.and it is that you will have to open one by one all the podcast channels to which you are subscribed.
- Opens podcast on your iPhone.
- Go to the tab Library.
- Enter one of the podcasts to which you are subscribed. Once on the main screen of that channel, tap on the three dots in the upper right corner.
- tap on Setting.
- Now disable automatic downloads.
- Repeat this procedure in each of the channels to which you are subscribed.
How to delete downloaded podcasts on iPhone and iPad
If you want to delete the podcasts that have been automatically downloaded to your iPhone, just do the following.
- Enter the application podcast on your iPhone or iPad.
- Now see the tab Library.
- Here, click on downloaded.
- In this section you can see all the episodes that are stored on your iPhone. Swipe them to the left to remove them.
- Also, tapping on Downloading you can see all the ones that are currently being downloaded. You can pause them using the button or swipe left on each one to cancel the download.
