And we will fully enter the basic firmware of the router. Once we are in this menu, we have to go to the “Advanced settings” menu to be able to see the information. To do this, we have to click on the “Menu” button in the upper left:
Once the menu is displayed, we proceed to go to “Advanced settings” and click on “OK”.
Once we are in the advanced configuration menu, we have to go to the «Configuration / WAN Settings / WAN InterfaceAs you can see here:
In this menu we must pay special attention to the name “ip4” used by VLAN 2 and the type of static IP. In our case, the data is as follows:
- IP Address: 10.142.237.6
- Gateway: 10.128.0.1
We only have this information, and we will also need the subnet mask, because the firmware of the neutral routers could ask us for it. To calculate the subnet mask you must enter a ip address calculatorwe put the IP address that we have calculated, and we are modifying the subnet mask from «8» until the «HostMin» coincides with our gateway, in our case the subnet mask is «9» in CIDR notation, or the mask of subnet 255.128.0.0 as you can see in the calculator.
When we have extracted the information from Movistar TV, you should know that the DNS servers it uses is the IP 172.26.23.3, therefore, the complete information is as follows:
- IP Address: 10.142.237.6
- Subnet Mask: 255.128.0.0
- Gateway: 10.128.0.1
- DNS: 172.26.23.3
Once we have all the necessary information, we will now have to get an ONT or configure the HGU router in pure bridge mode, passing all the tagged VLANs to the neutral router, otherwise it will not work. There are HGU routers that are “capped” at the firmware level and, although they allow the TV VLAN to be bridged, it does not really work afterward because the necessary Multicast traffic is not properly configured. Other models of HGU routers do allow you to put them in bridge mode, so you would not have to buy an additional ONT.
Neutral router configuration
There are currently several brands of routers that support the triple VLAN of Movistar FTTH. In the professional or “very advanced” user environment we have brands like Ubiquiti or Mikrotik, both brands are compatible although the configuration is quite complex, you will have to read step-by-step tutorials on how to do all this through templates or commands. Of the usual brands for domestic environments we have ASUS and the manufacturer D-Link, both brands will allow us to properly configure the neutral router or Wi-Fi Mesh system to have Movistar Plus+ in our home and without problems.
Next, we are going to explain how to configure both ASUS and D-Link routers with Movistar Triple VLAN FTTH.
Configuration on ASUS routers
The first thing we must do is enter the ASUS router through the IP address 192.168.50.1 or using the router.asus.com domain that will take us directly to the configuration wizard or firmware. Although ASUS routers allow you to configure the triple VLAN of Movistar FTTH through the configuration wizard, we are going to teach you how to do it through the Asuswrt firmware without using the wizard.
Once we are inside the configuration, we must go to «Advanced Settings / WAN / Internet Connection«. Here we will have to configure the following parameters:
- Basic configuration:
- WAN connection type: PPPoE
- Enable WAN: Yes
- Enable NAT: Yes
- NAT Type: Symmetric
- Do you want to enable UPnP: Yes or no, we have both options, for security it is better to choose “No” unless you are going to use this protocol.
- WAN IP address setting: Yes
- WAN DNS configuration: we can leave it as it is in the following screenshot:
Below in the “Account configuration” section we must put:
- Username: adslppp@telefonicanetpa
- Password: adslppp
The rest of the configurations can be left as they are in the following screenshot:
Once we have configured the Internet connection with PPPoE, it will not connect because we need to use VLANs. To configure the VLANs we must go to the «Advanced Settings / LAN / IPTV» and do the following:
- We select the “Movistar Triple VLAN” profile that we have available.
- Click on “IPTV Connection” to configure the TV.
The data that we have to incorporate in this menu are the following:
- WAN Connection Type: Static IP Address
- WAN IP address configuration: we put the IP, subnet mask and gateway data that we have extracted from the router.
- WAN DNS configuration: we put the IP address of the DNS of the TV, 172.26.23.3
The configuration would be as follows:
Once configured, click on “Accept” and then on “Apply”. Once done, the router will restart to apply all the changes, and we should have both an Internet connection and also the TV through the decoder. It is advisable to turn the decoder off and on so that it collects all the necessary information again and we do not have problems.
Configuration on D-Link routers
The procedure to be carried out in routers from the manufacturer D-Link is very similar, we have to first configure the Internet connection with PPPoE and then configure the necessary VLANs for everything to work correctly.
The first thing we must do is enter the router configuration by entering 192.168.0.1 or the IP address of the router. Once inside, we go to the section of «Settings / Internet«, This is where we will have to configure everything related to the connection.
In the main menu we will have to put the following options:
- My Internet connection is: PPPoE
- Username: adslppp@telefonicanetpa
- Password: adslppp
- Reconnect mode: always on
- Address mode: dynamic IP
We can leave the rest of the options blank, although if you want to use DNS servers other than those of Movistar, you must put it just below, or activate the DNS over HTTPS that the manufacturer’s D-Link Eagle Pro AI routers have.
Once we have correctly configured the PPPoE, we go to the “VLAN” tab and activate the “Triple-Play”.
When activating the «Triple-Play», we will have to configure the Internet VLAN, activating the VLAN TAG and putting «6» in «Internet VLAN ID» and priority 1. In the «IPTV VLAN» section we have to put ID 2 and priority 4, as you can see here:
To correctly configure the IPTV VLAN, we must click on “Advanced parameters” and this is where we will have to indicate:
- IPTV connection is: static
- IP address: the one we have extracted from the router
- Subnet mask: the one we have calculated
- Device vendor class: IAL
- DNS: the one we have indicated
- We activate the diffusion sequences.
In the following screenshot you have all the details on how we should configure it:
As you have seen, it is quite simple today to be able to have Movistar Plus+ in a neutral router, but we must bear in mind that not all routers are compatible, in this case the manufacturers ASUS and D-Link in all their routers do have Apart from this functionality, of course, more advanced equipment such as Ubiquiti, Mikrotik, any equipment with OPNsense or pfSense would also be compatible, although the configuration would be much more complex.
