Price of the dollar when AMLO entered
In December 2018, when López Obrador became president, the peso was trading at 20.3060 units per dollar. Today, more than four years after his administration began, the Mexican currency stands at 18.8476 per US bill, an accumulated appreciation of 7.2%, according to data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
Up to now, the peso has shown the best performance compared to other governments since the free floating regime for the exchange rate was established in 1994, which no longer has the intervention of the authorities and depends solely on the supply and the money market demand.
The pandemic and the peso at 25 per dollar
During the first year of the current administration, the local currency remained stable at an average of 19.3366 units per dollar. However, the pandemic was a breaking point, since in March 2020 the exchange rate reached an all-time high of 25 pesos per dollar, to later remain above 20 units per greenback until November of that same year.
As commercial and economic activities were regularized, in addition to a relaxation of some isolation measures, the peso remained at an average of 20.1912 units per dollar until the end of last year.
