The influence of Captain America (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) fades into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The characters, as part of the mythology of the story, will continue to be present in the collective memory. But the future of this superhero mega-narrative is headed in another direction and is headed, in the words of Kevin Feige, another actor, benedict cumberbatch in his role as Doctor Strange.
Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme (Scott Derrickson, 2016) was the character’s presentation film within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Through it, the story of this neurosurgeon who, due to an accident, loses control over his hands was told. After the fact, he explores different methods to recover the full mobility of his hands and, thus, resume the exercise of his profession. On that trip he arrives in Kathmandu, in Nepal, to find the recent Kamar Taj and thus train within the different spiritual and magical arts. There he meets The Elder, who guides him along the way and, after various events, Stephen Strange becomes the Sorcerer Supreme.
Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe he is known simply as Doctor Strange. He is responsible for defending the earth from magical threats, dark beings that move in registers outside the natural ones for the rest of the mortals. After that first appearance, the character returned to the story in Thor: Ragnarök (Taika Waititi, 2017), Avengers: Infinity War (Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, 2018), Avengers: Endgame (Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, 2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (Jon Watts, 2021). His next movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stands as a key film for Phase 4 of this narrative.
Kevin Feige’s words on Benedict Cumberbatch and Doctor Strange
Kevin Feige participated in an actor in honor of Benedict Cumberbatch. It was the discovery of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During the event, feige said:
“Benedict has made this character an icon, appearing in three historic top six movies of all time. It’s been quite a journey. I remember that our first meeting was organized as a general. We wanted to introduce him to this great character, and before we could, he said, ‘Tell me about Doctor Strange’ because you knew (the proposal to play the character); somewhere you knew what this could be and you have always seen the tremendous potential of this character. Because of that, you have become the anchor of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the only actor capable of guiding us through the madness of the multiverse.”
