GameStop He’s had a pretty rough couple of years. Since before the pandemic, the company had problems competing with Amazon and the digital stores of various companies. Although in 2020 and 2021 we saw an increase in the company’s shares, the situation has not improved, and the employees are the ones affected. Thus, it was recently revealed that a group of workers quit completelythis due to poor treatment by his manager.
Recently, it was revealed that four employees of the GameStop located in the Gateway Shopping Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, resigned after experiencing poor working conditions and a verbally abusive district manager. In his dismissal letter, they asked the merchants to buy their games from other stores that treat their employees better. This was what they commented:
“We regret to inform you that we all resign. Our District Manager does not respect us as employees or as human beings. Our district manager has told us that we had to meet sales quotas and running this store perfectly 6 months ago. Which was 3 months before many of us were hired. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the staff, we are not God. Spend your money in an establishment that respects its employees.”
This is the second time something like this has happened this year, and in the same state. Although at the moment there is no statement from GameStop in this regard, Frank Maurer, the recently promoted manager of the store, mentioned that this was a decision he had to make to take care of his mental health.
In an interview with Kotaku, Maurer has mentioned that his salary as a manager was not that great compared to a normal employee at stores like Target., while the rest of the employees at GameStop earn only the bare minimum, $9 in Nebraska. Along with this, he mentioned that he never received any kind of training for his position, or the necessary resources to do his job well.
Despite this, GameStop managers continued to demand a specific amount of profit. As if that were not enough, Maurer has mentioned that the regional manager constantly threatened and punished staff for their “failure” to meet impossible goals. Surprisingly, Gateway Mall’s resignation is not the first to take place. The former manager has mentioned that since August 2021, four similar cases have taken place, with two happening in Nebraska, including the most recent.
Unfortunately, this situation has also affected the morale of the employeesas Maurer believes that creating a union, similar to what has been attempted at Starbucks, Amazon and Apple in recent years, is nearly impossible at GameStop.
At the moment it is unknown if GameStop plans to take action to prevent this from happening again, although the solution is likely to go beyond changing the staff currently in charge. On related topics, the GameStop documentary premieres a trailer. Similarly, the company has entered the NFT market.
Editor’s note:
It’s a real shame what’s happening with GameStop. This is the largest video game store in the United States, and it is sad to see that the employees, those who are responsible for keeping this company afloat, are treated in a terrible way.
