LG isn’t alone in working overtime to make OLED screens for the next iPad. According to a report from The Electric, Samsung has already started the development of OLED panels double layer, which will result in brighter screens.
Samsung, which is the largest supplier of OLED displays to Apple, will use a two-stack tandem structure with double emission layer. Close sources confided that the South Koreans will manufacture the new series of panels to win orders from Apple.
If we remember, the iPad with OLED screen is something that has been rumored for months, however, this would not see the light before 2024. In September 2021 it reported that Apple and Samsung have canceled an agreement to develop a 10.8-inch iPad with an OLED screen.
The model would have debuted in 2022, but those from Cupertino backed down because Samsung’s OLED technology did not meet the requirements. At the time, Apple requested panels with a two-stack tandem structure because double the brightness and extend the life of the screen up to four times.
Because Samsung proposed single-stack structure panels, Apple canceled the project altogether. Apparently this decision echoed the manufacturer, who is already working on developing this technology. OLED panels would debut on the 2024 iPad and subsequently would reach the MacBook and iMac.
Samsung’s OLED-screen iPad won’t be first on the list
The report indicates that Samsung Display would begin production of the T-series of OLED panels in 2023 with prior approval from its customers. It is worth mentioning that Apple would not be the only one to benefit from this technology, since the company plans to offer it in other devices such as tablets, laptops and car screens.
Similarly, the first T-series of dual-layer OLED screens would debut on the Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Book. Samsung Display will provide its internal division with the necessary hardware to apply it to its products before offering it to the competition.
Samsung Display will not be the only manufacturer of OLED screens for Apple. A few weeks ago it was reported that LGDisplay will increase its capacity to manufacture 15,000 OLED screens for the iPad. The goal is to provide screens to those in Cupertino for the next generation of the iPad Air.
Although some rumors suggest that we will see an iPad Air with an OLED screen in 2022, some analysts believe that it will not be until 2023 or 2024 that this technology will be present in Apple tablets.
