The day has come, Apple has held its launch event set for September 14 and we have welcomed its new generation of mobile phones. The iPhone 13 are already among us, following the new tradition of dispensing with the S models every two seasons, and again there have been four terminals. In the lower tier, the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13. In the upper tier, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. If a nomenclature works, don’t change it.
And since they are already official and we already have all the specifications on the table, it is time to see what has changed this season. What new features have been introduced in the new phones that were not present in the iPhone 12. Let’s see how has been the evolution in the last year in the most important ecosystem of devices for North Americans.
ProMotion comes to the iPhone 13 … Pro
Since the high refresh rates began to reach the mobile market, the iPhone has been in the pools to incorporate them but it has not been until now that Apple has decided to take the leap. With the iPhone 13 Pro, not in the normal ones, Apple definitely makes the jump from 60Hz of the iPhone 12 to 120Hz with the arrival of ProMotion to the iPhone 13. The refresh is adaptive and can drop to 10Hz in case it is necessary. Now, at last, the iPhone screen goes at the level of many of the games that populate the App Store. Of course, all four phones have OLED panels.
In terms of diagonals nothing has changed in this new generation. The iPhone 13 Mini maintains the 5.4 inches of previous generations, the iPhone 13 remains at 6.1 inches and the same happens with the Pro and Pro Max models. Apple tells us, however, that the maximum brightness does rise 28% in this new generation. The screen now allows peaks of up to 1,200 nits of brightness. But there is a change in the screen although indirectly, now we have a 20% smaller notch, so we have more screen surface for us.
New processor for everyone, Apple A15 Bionic
As expected, Apple has introduced the new processor for its iPhone, the Apple A15 Bionic. Apple includes in its new processor 15,000 million transistors and distributes them among its six cores, with two cores for high performance and four cores for power saving. Apple claims that the A15 Bionic is 50% faster than the previous generation Apple A14 Bionic.
The GPU also takes a leap forward and is now capable of executing 15.8 trillion operations per second combining the power of its five cores, 30% faster than the previous generation. The processor also updates the power when it comes to artificial intelligence. Here, the AI continues to collaborate with every corner of the phone, from navigation to photography, from running apps to Siri.
Larger photographic sensors, more autonomy
Apple boasts in its presentation of having placed in its iPhone 13 the largest sensor manufactured by the company so far for these models. It is a 12.2 megapixel sensor whose resolution sounds familiar, but now has 1.7 micron pixels on a side, which means that it is capable of capturing a large amount of light and, therefore, information. The main camera is accompanied by a large aperture f / 1.6 lens and has a focal length of 26 millimeters (which also sounds quite a bit to us).
Regarding the Pro modelsApple also mounts a larger main sensor of 12.2 megapixels because this time the pixels are 1.9 micrometers and the lens that accompanies this main camera is an f / 1.5. The super wide angle lens offers an f / 1.8 lens and the telephoto camera offers 3x optical magnification with 77 millimeters of focal length.
Although Apple does not usually offer the capacity of its batteries and that data we have to know later, the company does stop to talk about autonomy and here we notice an increase compared to previous generations. For instance, iPhone 13 Mini has 1.5 hours more autonomy regular while the iPhone 13 also increases yours by 2.5 hours. And the same in the rest of the family’s phones. By the way, here we still have wireless charging and support for MagSafe.
