In 2021, 25% of Mexicans visited one of the 52 most famous sites of illegal transmission taking advantage of the fact that there are no clear mechanisms in the country to mitigate or penalize servers, as well as people who ‘pirate’ the contents of companies.
“Mexico has regulation but it is not yet very specific about digital content,” said Ana Sousa, Director, Strategic Relations of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE). “A lot of content is moving into the digital world and crimes are moving into that realm,” she added during the 2022 Anti-Piracy Summit Forum.
This ambiguity even generated a disagreement at the end of July between Fox Sports and Claro Sports during the broadcast of León’s game against América. Although both companies have the transmission rights, Claro Sports broadcasts for free through YouTube, which, according to the company of American origin, is not allowed.
Fox Sports said then that, as part of these efforts, which seek to guarantee the quality of the transmission and prevent piracy, it disconnected more than 40 sites that transmitted part of its sports content on social networks, such as F1, WWE and the game of Liga MX between León vs América, without authorization and without ownership of rights.
Fox Sports recently sought a alliance with social networks such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram to download transmissions that do not have the rights and urged the authorities to generate a regulation that allows mitigating the phenomenon of piracy in the country.
According to the report Dimension and impact of online piracy of audiovisual content in Latin Americacarried out by the Center for Telecommunications Studies of Latin America, in Mexico more streaming illegal in Latin America. Of 984 million visits that are generated in 100 illegal sites in the country, 82% is to watch free transmission content (OTT).
The report calculates that this problem causes losses greater than 5,000 million dollars in the Latin American region.
