Apple has released iOS 15.4 for everyone after just over a month in beta. The update is quite significant for a good number of users because, finally, it will be possible to unlock some iPhones with Face ID while wearing a mask.
In addition, iOS 15.4 arrives in time to receive the iPhone SE 2022 and the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro in green. Although the reservation of these started from the previous week, it will be next Friday when the buyers will begin to receive their devices.
It is important to mention, however, that the arrival of iOS 15.4 does not mean that all iPhones with Face ID can be unlocked when wearing a mask. Unfortunately, this feature will be limited to the terminals of the two most recent generations. That is, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 —and their respective Pro variants, of course—.
Although Apple did not explain the exact reasons for this decision, it is very likely that it is due to a technical limitation in the processor of the previous models. The complete list of iPhones compatible with said function, below:
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 ProMax
- iPhone 13mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 ProMax
- iPad Pro 5th generation
If you own any of these devices, the thing to keep in mind is that face mask unlock will not be turned on by default. Therefore, you need to manually enable it in Settings.
To do this, you just have to go to the section Face ID and code and activate the option Use Face ID with a mask. Later, iOS 15.4 will warn you that the system works better when you show your full face:
“Face ID is most accurate when set to only recognize the full face. To use Face ID while wearing a mask, iPhone can recognize the unique features around the eye area to authenticate.”
Universal Control comes to iPad and Mac
iOS 15.4 has not been the only novelty of the day. Apple has also released iPad OS 15.4, which finally adds support for Universal Control. We are talking about the proposal presented at WWDC 2021 that allows Simultaneously control an iPad and a Mac with a single keyboard and mouse. But beyond moving the pointer between device screens, it is also possible to move files. Another example of the great integration that exists in the apple ecosystem.
Both iOS 15.4 and iPadOS 15.4 can now be downloaded. Please note that the update will appear throughout the day on supported devices.
