The economy of Apple apps on iOS has grown by a 42% in Spain During last year. generating 121,000 jobs in the country. In relation to the entire Android ecosystem, all its app stores and devices, a total of 135,000 jobs are calculated within the country, following the path set in 2020.
These data come from a study carried out by the Progressive Policy Institute, which takes into account the entire value chain of mobile applications. From development, through its design to the entire sales process and thus determine the entire economy of apps on the continent.
“Focusing on mobile operating systems, we estimate that there are 2.276 million European workers working in the iOS ecosystem, 28% more than in 2019. In addition, we estimate that 2.486 million people work in the entire Android ecosystem. Also 28% more than in 2019”, explains the report.
In short, the app economy is an important source of jobs and growth for the entire European economy during the pandemic. These jobs kept the economy afloat during the worst months of the lockdown and expanded further as the pandemic moved into new phases.

Small developers on the App Store increase by 20%
Another study carried out by independent economists from the consultancy Analysis Group has determined that the number of small developers joining the App Store during 2021 increased by 20%. Furthermore, those who entered in 2019, on average, have seen their income grow by 113% over the last two years.
The report also shows how the number of new app creators accelerated in 2021, showing how the app economy also permeates this type of developer.
During 2021, nearly 200,000 new developers launched an app on the Apple App Store. 20% more than in 2020. This 20% growth is mainly made up of new app creators in Europe (24%) followed by China (23%), the United States (14%) and Japan (4.3 %). The remaining 34% comes from regions such as South Korea, India and Brazil.
In addition, in some countries the number of small developers entering the ecosystem and contributing to the economy of iOS apps has increased significantly. The UK saw 40% growth from 2019 for this type of app creator and Germany 25% for the same period.
