During the weekend, Elon Musknow owner of Twitter, asked his followers if you would like to see Vine’s return. I am referring, of course, to the extinct Twitter video platform. A few years ago it had a moment of tremendous popularity, although it later collapsed completely due to poor management.
Well, according to information from Axios, Elon Musk has already made the decision to resurrect Vine. The aforementioned medium comments that the manager instructed a team of Twitter engineers to get to work on the return of Vine. Even more surprising: his plan is to finalize his return this year.
Is it feasible? If we consider that 2022 only has a couple of months left, it obviously looks complicated. Elon Musk’s idea would be for engineers to base themselves on the Vine source code, which would help save a lot of time because they don’t have to start from scratch. However, a source close to Axios mentions that, even going back to the code, a lot of work is required. Therefore, it is difficult to think that they will be able to get it up and running in a short period of time.
We must remember that Vine was born as an independent platform. It was not until 2012 when Twitter opened the portfolio to buy it in an attempt to expand its video content. From then on, the company, which at the time was headed by Jack Dorsey, struggled to make its new product profitable. Vine began to decline and it was in 2016 when Twitter chose to close it “definitively”.
“To all the creators, thank you for taking chances with this app in the past. To the many team members over the years who made this what it was, thank you for your contributions. And of course, thank you to everyone who who came to watch and laugh every day,” Vine’s goodbye message read.
Who would have thought that, six years later, Elon Musk would buy Twitter and then bring back Vine? Surely no one…
Certainly, Vine’s return makes too much sense. Today, video content, but especially short clips, are taking the internet by storm. TikTok is one of the most popular social networks in the world for betting on this format of limited duration. Instagram and YouTube have tried to follow in their footsteps, but without achieving the same success. Now it is evident that Elon Musk wants Twitter to also position itself in this sector.
In fact, a few hours ago he questioned: “What could we do to make it better than TikTok?” This makes us assume that Elon Musk is willing to listen to the opinion of the Twitter community to, this time, create a better product. Yes indeed, it will be difficult for the platform to resurrect with all the changes it requires.
