Gerardo Fernandez Norona
Would you go for a Tax Reform? When? What adjustments to income and expenses would you make?
Yes, progressive. A constituent congress must be held to make a profound reform to the Constitution of 17, throw back the neoliberal reforms, recover all that is the people… A progressive tax regime is necessary. That means that whoever earns more pays more.
What role would businessmen play in your government?
The one they want to play. If you want to collaborate, if you want to promote, if you want to strengthen the mixed economy, welcome. If you want to leave as opponents, welcome.
What is the greatest pending in economic matters that there is in the current government or in the current administration or at the present time?
There are many pending that are not from the current administration. There is a social injustice of centuries, not decades. That has to be resolved. No boy or girl should work. We have to ensure that no one lives on the streets. We have to make people eat three times a day. Those things we have to solve.
Ricardo Monreal
Would you go for tax reform?
Yes, it cannot be postponed and broaden the taxpayer base, make informality formal, and be very efficient in collection, but also introduce fiscal progressivity, that is, that those who earn more and those who receive more profits pay more. That is typical of advanced countries and Mexico has lagged behind.
The time has come for a comprehensive fiscal policy. The conditions are given and it cannot be postponed. Tax reform is not always popular, but it is necessary for any nation and any country.
What role would businessmen play in his eventual government?
Fundamental, because they are the employers. It is about not exempting them from any obligation, but rather convincing them of the social commitment they have towards people. And facilitate procedures with single windows, deregulation, tax reform, procedures, opening. Everything is possible.
What is the greatest pending in economic matters that the government leaves?
I would say that for SMEs and MSMEs, the financial support part, I think we could have focused more strength, more support on small and medium-sized businesses, they are the ones that need it the most and are the ones that generate the most employment. The pandemic caused havoc that has not been fully overcome. The president didn’t really make changes, he didn’t make reforms, he didn’t apply new taxes. Entrepreneurs must be happy because they obtained profits, they have obtained very high profits, more than in other six-year terms
Marcelo Ebrard
Would you go for tax reform?
They are going to have to make some fiscal adjustments, but it would be too early to say it right now, but that always has to be reviewed. But I am not proposing to create new taxes or raise the tax rate. Let’s see it.
What role will businessmen play in an eventual government?
Very important. They are a substantial part.
What is the greatest pending in economic matters left by the current government?
You have to consolidate everything you’ve done or all the projects you’ve done that imply propping them up in these coming years so that they have the desired results: refinery, Mayan Train, Transismic. That would be the main thing in economic matters to reinforce these coming years.
Claudia Sheinbaum
Would you go for tax reform?
At this moment I would not think about it, of course it is necessary to study it more, if tax evasion continued to decrease, there would still be much more income, there are still illegal invoices, at the same time (we must) facilitate the payment of taxes I think that It is something important that would allow more collection before thinking about raising taxes.
The income through customs is around one trillion pesos. If you have more income from customs, obviously eliminating corruption and promoting the development of our country from exports and imports, obviously you will have much more income.
What role would businessmen play in your government?
The private initiative in the country is very important. It is extremely important that the investment continue, the problem is the corruption that occurred in the past and that a group was the one that governed more than a democratic power. I believe that this division between economic power and political power occurred with this government and must be maintained. But while investments are necessary in the country, they are necessary by eliminating corruption. What we have to think about is that private investment also generates well-being in the country. The model of a country that sells cheap labor to the world has generated inequality and poverty.
What would be the slope in economic matters that must be resumed?
Keep working for wellness. Yes, we can talk about economic growth, we can talk about investments, but our indicator must always be the well-being of Mexicans.
The Income-Expenditure Survey (of the Inegi) spoke of the reduction of inequalities, reduction of poverty and I believe that this has to be a fundamental indicator in addition to sustainability.
Xochitl Galvez
Would you go for a Tax Reform?
First I would go to stop wasting money. A refinery that was going to cost 8,000 million, that has 18,000 million and that threatens to cost more than 20,000 million and that it will not be ready until 2025 is a serious risk, because we already have brutal fiscal losses. You made a business model that worked in 2022 with 8,000 million dollars. I want to see the new business model. It is a disaster! So we have lost or spent more than 200,000 million pesos in that refinery.
We took a Mayan Train that was going to cost 120,000 million and is already reaching close to 400,000 million. In other words, there is money, we have thrown it away. Why carry out a tax reform at this time if we have thrown public money away? First for inept and also for bandits. So, first topic, make a good management of public resources. Two, build trust, make clear public policies so that new investments arrive.
What role would businessmen play in your government?
An important role because they are the ones that generate wealth, generate employment. What would I ask for? Well, that we have better paid jobs, that pay their taxes. And what would I give them in return? Legal certainty, not persecuting them, not stigmatizing them, not hating them. Not only manufacturing, maquila companies, but “mindfacture”, companies related to robotics, artificial intelligence, the future, aeronautics, electric cars, green hydrogen.
What is the greatest pending in economic matters that this government leaves?
It seems to me that the Free Trade Agreement. Leave pending this consultation on energy, on the field. All for violating the legal certainty of the treaty. We have to understand that our country, our main trading partners are the United States and Canada. Many of the jobs come from there. The president cannot boast about remittances, because they are not an economic success.
