Last March, a report from Above the Line dropped a bomb: Damon Lindeloffresponsible for one of the most anticipated films of Star Wars, left the intergalactic saga. Shortly after, during the Star Wars Celebration 2023, it was confirmed that the producer was no longer commanding the project. Now thanks to the podcast The Hot MicWe know details of his vision. One that, of course, will not see light.
According to the aforementioned source, Damon Lindelof wanted to delve into a stage of Star Wars never before explored; one after the events of episode IX (2019). Specifically, its story would be set 60 years after the rise of skywalker.
Most interesting of all, Lindelof had chosen Rey Skywalker as the protagonist of his story. Of course, he would be a significantly more adult version of the character than the one we saw in the franchise’s last trilogy. In fact, the idea was that the acclaimed actress Helen Mirren, 77, would take that role.
The narrative of the aforementioned was intended to tell how Rey Skywalker was dedicating his life to training children and young people to become Jedi. The main character’s goal was for these legendary warriors to reappear in the universe.
Now, Lindelof, like anyone else who aspires to lead a new production of Star Wars, he had to submit the script to Lucasfilm. Unfortunately, your proposal was not accepted because they didn’t consider it good enough. Those directed by Kathleen Kennedy did not give her the opportunity to present another script and preferred to do without her services.
Does the project description sound familiar? At Star Wars Celebration that took place in the second week of April, Lucasfilm announced a movie whose story centers on the figure of Rey Skywalker. Yes, they took Lindelof’s foundation, to a certain extent…
While the new feature film will also chronicle Rey’s attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order, it won’t stray too far in the timeline. Its events will take place just 15 years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is why Daisy Ridley will resume the interpretation of the character. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (ms marvel), for his part, will be the director, while Steven Knight (creator of Peaky Blinders) is redoing the script.
“[Ray] He’s trying to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, on what he promised Luke, so that’s where we’re headed.”
Kathleen Kennedy.
Regarding Damon Lindelof, at the moment he is completely out of Star Wars. In a recent interview with Variety, regretted not being able to be part of Rey’s film. “I was in more than talks to join the universe of Star Wars. I joined the universe and then they asked me to retire. The movie will exist, but unfortunately not with me,” she said.
Of course, it does not close the door to being part of the universe created by George Lucas. If a new opportunity presents itself in the future, he will not hesitate to take it.:”Would I line up outside the club to try to get in again? Absolutely. If you don’t succeed the first time, try again, or try again, as Yoda would say.”
