Marvel confirmed that the series Daredevil Netflix is part of the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A producer from the company stated that the three seasons that aired from 2015 to 2018 occur in the Sacred Timeline, the line that gives life to the MCU.
In an interview with Screen Rant, the executive producer of Threw out, Brad Winderbaum, offered more details about the return of Matt Murdock. Winderbaum solved one of the puzzles that has haunted Daredevil fans for years: where in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the Netflix series located?
The producer of Threw out stated that they were cautious about what content belongs to the Sacred Timeline and what does not. Daredevil and other Netflix series were not created by Marvel Studios, but by Marvel Television, a division led by Jeph Loeb. With the promotion of Kevin Feige as creative director and head of the entire MCU in 2019, Loeb left the company and his work is not canon.
“It was another part of the company that developed Netflix material. We were aware of what they were doing, they were aware of what we were doing, but there was still a lot to balance,” Winderbaum said. “But now that some time has passed and we see how well integrated the stories are, I think that I personally, Brad Winderbaum, would be safe in saying that it is part of the Sacred Timeline.”
The statements of the producer of Threw out have not been officially endorsed by Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige and company are likely to quietly consider the material. The top boss of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never confirmed or denied whether the series are canon.
What does it mean that the series of Daredevil for Netflix to be canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The confirmation that Daredevil for Netflix is part of the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe means that Marvel Studios could build on the stories that developed during the three seasons. The series is one of Marvel’s best works on television and many fans have been asking for its continuation for a long time.
The return of Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio to their respective roles was the first step. D’Onofrio himself stated in an interview that the Kingpin he played in Hawkeye was the same character he played for Daredevil. In contrast, Cox was convinced that he would never put on the superhero suit again and told D’Onofrio that he had to put the idea of a possible return behind him.
Another clue about the decision to make the series canon appears in the description of the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again from the US Copyright Office. The last line mentions the word “reintroduces,” which means we would see some summary of what happened on Netflix.
Marvel Studios presents Daredevil in which old rivals Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) attempt to leave their darker alteregos behind to serve the people of New York, only for their past to catch up with them. In the first episode of the series we are reintroduced to the world of Daredevil.
While fans are happy, one who disapproves of Disney’s actions is Steven DeKnight, showrunner from the first season of Daredevil. A few months ago, DeKnight declared that changing the name of a series is an old scam by Disney to reset contract terms.
Steven DeKnight is aware that he will not get any compensation, since it is “a new series”, even though it has the same actors.
