The Last of Us it became a huge hit immediately after it premiered on HBO and Max. A project that made its fans fall in love and that, moreover, more than convinced the new public and also the critics. Not in vain has it been nominated for 24 Emmy Awards, the second series with the most nominations after succession.
The production will have a second season that has just begun its development due to the strike of Hollywood writers and actors. To update the situation and reassure fans of The Last of Usone of its creators, craig mazinhas granted an interview to The Hollywood Reporter. In it, the showrunner has commented news about the seriesin addition to reviewing the success of season 1.
One of the main points that Mazin wanted to reveal was about the future of The Last of Us beyond the second season. On previous occasions, both he and the co-creator Neil Druckman they had suggested that they planned to do at least two or three more. Something in which he insists, stating that in principle the idea is extended to the fourth season. “You never know. They may end up being three or five seasons. But four seems like a good number, ”she acknowledges.
Unlike what happened in the first season, the second will not adapt the entire second video game. The story of this is much longer, so it will be divided into several installments. What I can confirm is that that story doesn’t fit in a single season“, says Mazin. In addition, the co-creator of the series explained that each season could have a different number of episodes. A decision that will always be subject to narrative needs and not to external elements.
“Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more. The best news is that the public wants more. We won’t indulge the desire to do more just to make you happier when you hear how many episodes are announced. If you don’t like how many episodes are in a season because you want more, that’s fine. But when it’s all said and done, I think the way we’ll have told it will become clear. I don’t know if any season will have the same number of episodes as others. But it doesn’t matter, the number is not important. The important thing is that, when they get to the end of the season, they say: ‘It’s been a good season’”

What will happen in season 2 of The Last of Us?
who have played The Last of Us They know that Part II of the video game has very shocking scenes. Without going into the field of spoilers, in the first bars of the video game an event occurs that marks its protagonists forever. Something that they will presumably keep in the second season of the HBO series, although there may be important changes.
“Anyone who has played the game and then watched the first season knows that sometimes we do exactly what was going on in the game and other times we do something very different. We don’t necessarily do things in the same order either. or at the same time,” Mazin begins. “In our first season, we repeatedly did things that were annoying: everyone died except Joel and Ellie. People understood by watching the series that it was a story in which people are not safe, ”he adds.
Mazin also explained that his intention is not to keep the leading duo safe just because their actors are popular or have good chemistry. In this sense, he added that the idea is not to unnecessarily stretch the survival of certain characters “until the actors ask for too much money” or the series loses popularity and ratings. “Anyone can die at any time,” he stated.
Comments from the co-creator of The Last of Us remain in the same vein as those of Peter Pascal. “It wouldn’t make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to get severely off track. That’s my honest answer,” the Chilean actor said some time ago.
What was your favorite scene from The Last of Us?
In its nine episodes, The Last of Us He managed to perfectly balance the fidelity to the original work and the changes due to the difference in format. That equation resulted in countless memorable sequences that were repeatedly commented on by fans. When asked about his favorite scene, Mazin did not hesitate.
“I keep in a special place in my heart a scene in the last episode that I ended up filming because our director had contracted COVID. It is the scene where Joel reveals to Ellie why he has that scar on his head. She says, ‘I guess time heals all.’ And he says: ‘This time has not been the time’. I’m particularly proud of that scene because, first of all, it’s simple: it’s two people talking, which is what I like the most. They don’t even move when it gets really interesting, so everything else falls away and it’s just their connection. AND I am very proud of the performance that Pedro [Pascal] and beautiful [Ramsey] offered at that moment. It was also the penultimate day of shooting, so it was the culmination of a calendar year of shooting and the work they had done with each other as professionals, but also as human beings. It was so real and it went so far. I just love it”.

Have you cast an actress for Abby yet?
One of the most important characters of the following seasons of The Last of Us it will be Abby. This woman became quite an icon in the second video game, so fans are looking forward to knowing who will be the actress who plays her in the series. And, although due to the strike the casting are stopped, Mazin did not deny that they found the actress before the protests. “Could be,” she pointed out with a laugh.
He also hinted that the artist chosen to play the crucial character may not be the most obvious choice, nor the one that many would consider—at least on paper—as the most appropriate. But he also asserted that they have taken the selection of the actress for the role of Abby very seriously, and that they are working to close the matter despite the strike. “We have a pretty good track record of making big casting announcements that make people say, ‘Really?’ And it will probably continue to happen,” the creative explained.
Due to the strike, everything seems to indicate that the filming of the second season of The Last of Us it will be postponed several months. The recordings were scheduled for the beginning of 2024, but while the situation in Hollywood does not improve, the production of the series will continue to be delayed more and more. And with it, unfortunately, the release date.
