The winners in this 2020 edition of the Food Awards of Spain have been chosen from among more than two hundred candidates, who opted for the categories of food industry, second prize for entrepreneurial initiative, organic production, food internationalization, fishing and aquaculture production, restoration , and communication.
Food industry: Coopaman Cooperative Society of Castilla-La Mancha (Las Pedroñeras, Cuenca). Leader in the production and commercialization of fresh garlic, its cooperative nature of support to the local farmer has been valued, which helps to fix the population to the territory and improve the income of the producers. Its R + D + i work is focused on improving product quality, traceability, new IV-range products and the use of by-products with the garlic essential oil plant, which implies a commitment to the circular economy . Second prize to the Entrepreneurial Initiative: Spanish Dehydrated Foods (Pedrajas de San Esteban, Valladolid). To do this, it uses a production method that allows the recovery of autochthonous crops and a novel transformation process by developing specific dehydration. It encourages healthy eating, combining the modern concept of snacks with the recovery of low-temperature cooking.
Ecological Production: Riofrío 1963 (Loja, Granada). A pioneer in its sector, it is the first company in the world to achieve organic certification for sturgeon and caviar production, and also the first in Spain to achieve organic certification for trout production. It stands out for its commitment to R + D + i in fish farming, which has been a constant since its inception. The use of the waterfall to produce hydroelectric energy or the improvement of water purification stands out. Its ability to generate local employment is also noteworthy.
Food Internationalization: Olives Torrent (Cordova). After more than 120 years of history, this company is an example of internationalization with its presence in more than 50 countries. Specifically, 74% of its turnover comes from sales abroad. It has multiple presentations of the same product, thanks to its commitment to innovation to adapt to consumer tastes. Among them, the company has developed the Oliva Clan line, aimed specifically at the child consumer. Concepts such as sustainability and equality are embedded in the company, which drives the circular economy.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Production: Organization of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Vessels (Opagac), for the implementation of the responsible fishing tuna seal, which has allowed the development of the certification of sustainable practices of the chain of custody of tuna production, the first of these characteristics worldwide. This seal is a necessary complement to ensure the traceability of the product. It takes into account the guidelines of the ILO (International Labor Organization) and is the first to consider social aspects included in international conventions.
Restaurants: Rodi Restaurant (Fuendejalón, Zaragoza). Establishment with a long history in which its great gastronomic relationship with the environment where it is located stands out, as well as its commitment to tradition and local products, in particular wine tourism and gastronomic tourism in the area. It has shown a great capacity for innovation in the preparation of dishes and products based on local wine. Also noteworthy is the incorporation of new consumer and market trends into their elaborations, maintaining the essence of the productions.
