Comedy as part of women’s empowerment
Within the humor industry, comedians have managed to find a window to publicize everything that is important to them.
Like society itself, humor is constantly changing, adapting to new social circumstances, but always seeking to highlight a part that is rarely talked about seriously, a situation that is evident from the way comedy is now done, being the comedy industry a source of growth, development and empowerment of women.
For countries like Brazil or Mexico, it is a recent creation to do comedy on stage, which would be known as stand up, in addition to aspects such as the popularization of social networks that allowed comedy to evolve and short capsules, with themes many times controversial, a language that had no place on TV became increasingly popular and will allow not only to reach new audiences, but also to address situations that more traditional media did not allow.
“When I started in this career, 20 years ago, it was not easy. Today I am surrounded by competent and talented women, who have made it much more enjoyable. I have seen many changes in the industry, especially in the dialogue, in the self-observation and in the internal policies of the companies. The business culture has changed, we still have a long way to go, but we are certainly on the right track”, says Ana Gondolo, Backdoor LATAM project manager.
Comedy as part of women’s empowerment
As Backdoor points out, current humor is characterized by using a humor with which its audience identifies, because it represents current society, as Mariana Balsa, producer of Backdoor México, points out, adds: “Being a woman in this industry is very similar to any other. There were few women in the entertainment industry a few years ago and now you hear and see more women on set and better yet, in senior and managerial positions. At Backdoor there is a large percentage of women who work in production, marketing, management, sales and on set.”
