Reuters.- Chinese government officials made their latest show of regulatory force on Friday, urging major private transport and delivery companies to improve the way they distribute revenue and ensure rest periods for their workers.
The officials’ message was conveyed during a meeting with ten companies – including Meituan, Didi Global, Ele.me from Alibaba Group and Tencent Holdings – according to a statement released by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
The meeting followed the publication of guidelines drawn up by regulators for food delivery platforms to guarantee their workers income above minimum wage levels. State media has criticized Didi for failing to pay drivers fairly.
Chinese regulators have lashed out at its biggest tech companies this year, criticizing them for policies that exploit workers and infringe on consumer rights, as part of a campaign to exert more control over large sectors of the economy after years of uncontrolled growth.
Industries such as video games and entertainment have also been the target of this offensive.
On Wednesday, China called video game companies like Tencent and NetEase to a meeting where they were asked to abide by new industry rules and shift their focus away from revenue and traffic growth.
