Where to buy a CFE Telecom chip?
The only barrier to obtaining CFE Telecom’s service is acquiring the chip, but once the card is obtained, users can activate the SIM by registering online or by calling the customer service number. They also have the option of recharging balance in several branches registered in different entities, such as in Mexico City.
The company has 1,212 charging points in CDMX, of which 54 correspond to Telecomm and 1,158 to small businesses.
Although CFE Telecom has a restriction in its concession that limits the commercialization of its mobile services in certain markets, both the company and the users have found ways to circumvent this limitation. Consumers have begun to sell CFE Telecom SIM cards through social networks such as Facebook and retail channels such as Mercado Libre, despite the fact that these cards are actually free. The prices of these cards vary, starting from 100 pesos and promotions of five SIM cards are also offered for 230 pesos.
CFE Telecom’s OMV has 11 mobile phone plans and even revealed to Expansion via transparency that has 6,493 prepaid users.
What is the coverage of CFE Telecom?
CFE Telecom has managed to expand its presence in the national market in less than a year from its start of operations. To speed up its coverage, the company has established an alliance with Altán Redes, using its network infrastructure to reach increasingly remote areas of the country. In addition, it has deployed telecommunications towers and antennas, as well as satellite support, to bring internet to more challenging places, such as the mountains.
According to data obtained through transparency, from August of last year to January 9, 2023, CFE Telecom has installed 4,177 towers. The infrastructure of these towers is essential to enable connectivity services, and the company has invested around 6,146 million pesos, which represents 98.6% of its assigned budget for 2022, which was 6,227 million pesos.
CFE Telecom’s goal is to install a total of 12,601 towers to provide coverage to 118 million people by the end of López Obrador’s term. Currently, thanks to the alliance with Altán Redes, the state virtual mobile operator has 7,446 towers, which, added to the CFE Telecom towers, reaches a total of 11,623.
So far, the company has activated 81,165 WiFi hotspots, located in libraries, branches of Bancos del Bienestar, schools, health centers, federal buildings, rural hospitals, Liconsa, DIF, Sedena, SEDATU, public places, Metrobús, Telecomm branches, among others.
Of the 81,165 WiFi points, 60,503 correspond to 4G technology, while 15,093 are satellite technology and 5,569 are Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL), whose modem technology transforms telephone or copper lines into connectivity lines.
It also established an alliance with Altán Redes, the firm in charge of Red Compartida, in order to more quickly expand its coverage throughout the country.
