EFE.- The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office asked this Thursday for a public apology for the transfeminicide of Paola Buenrostro in 2016, which meant a before and after for the struggle of trans women in the capital and the country.
“The Prosecutor’s Office recognizes its institutional responsibility and I offer a public apology to the memory of Paola Buenrostro and her family and to Kenya Cuevas,” said the prosecutor Ernestina Godoy at an event held in the place where Buenrostro, a sex worker, was murdered by a man who to this day he is still at large.
Kenya Cuevas was the best friend of Paola and, since then, their fight has not stopped.
He witnessed the transfeminicide of his partner, saw the man -who said she had shot himself-, recorded on video of the subsequent moments and even cut Insurgentes Avenue with the body in the absence of the authorities.
The day after the murder, the alleged culprit was released and hours later he fled.
The victim was not recognized as a trans woman after the September 30, 2016 murder.
The ministerial agents treated them in masculine terms and the case was not investigated as a hate crime.
Kenya Cuevas shouted this Thursday with a broken mouth “we made it” and recognized today as a point already part of the path of a fight that flourished after the murder of her best friend.
“Paola, your name has become a symbol of indignation that has crossed borders to obtain justice. Your death has overshadowed hope for us trans women, we have become visible. We still have a way to go and battles to win, but our greatest revenge is that we are happy, “said the activist.
Cuevas is one of the most recognized defenders of the rights of trans women in the country.
She founded the association Casa de las Muñecas Tiresias and Casa Hogar Paola Buenrostro, where trans women at risk or exclusion receive counseling and reception.
The Human Rights Commission of Mexico City criticized in 2019 the “lack of due diligence and application of the gender perspective” in the case of Buenrostro.
In addition, he demanded that the prosecution issue a public apology in honor of the memory of Paola Buenrostro and for Kenya Cuevas, a recommendation that was fulfilled this Thursday.
