The supermarket chain Carrefour has announced the agreement reached with El Corte Inglés to transfer 47 stores of the Supercor brand that the Spanish company has in the main communities of our country. According to the statement released by the French Group, the total business value of the transaction is 60 million euros.
The brand’s expansion plan thus continues in its bid to strengthen its position in the supermarkets and convenience stores, compared to the larger hypermarket model on which they had focused until now. In a process similar to that which has occurred with the acquisition by the Auchan Group of numerous DIA, to open more neighborhood establishments, the French company intends to diversify its stores and geographical areas.
The intention, according to the statement, is to convert these 47 Supercor stores into establishments of its brands. Carrefour Market, Carrefour Express and Supecobetting on the convenience sector and strengthening its position in strategic areas for the company, such as the communities of Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia and the Valencian Community.
This operation is part of the growth plans of the brand in our country, which in recent years has already converted 36 Eroski hypermarkets and 127 Supersol stores. For its part, El Corte Inglés, which bought the Sánchez Romero Supermarkets in 2021, thus continues to get rid of many of its Supercor supermarkets, one of the few convenience store subsidiaries that continue in the Spanish Group.
It is expected that, once approved under the usual economic conditions, the transfer operation will be completed in the first half of next yearwhen we will probably know exactly which Supercor stores will be converted under the new brand.
