- The original “Avatar” was released in 2009 and with a gross of 2.9 billion dollars, it was the highest-grossing film in history.
- “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” are ready. “Avatar 2” begins its world premiere on December 14; and the third, in 2024.
- “Avatar 4” will hit theaters in 2026.
At a media conference during the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) taking place this week in South Korea, Avatar 4 producer Jon Landau spoke about the new film.
“We have completed most of the first act of ‘Avatar 4,’ we did it now for logistical reasons,” Landau said, adding, “We designed most of the film, but we haven’t shot all of it yet, just the first act.”
Landau spoke to the media after showing a 15-minute preview of “Avatar: The Way of Water” (“Avatar 2”) at a sold-out event that was part of the successful Korean Film Festival.
James Cameron, the director, also appeared at the presentation, but virtually. In a conversation with other panelists he discussed the film’s underlying ecological message and the film’s high frame rate projection.
When does Avatar 2 hit theaters?
After having re-released the first “Avatar” in a remastered presentation, “Avatar: Sense of Water” will hit theaters on December 14, 2022.
Also, Avatar 3which is already completely shot, has a scheduled release date for December 2024.
And “Avatar 4”: it would be presented in theaters on December 18, 2026.
At the conference, Landau also revealed that each sequel will introduce a new culture, while maintaining the cultures seen and will be seen in the previous films.
“With each sequel, we will introduce audiences to new cultures and new biomes. We will not leave behind the cultures that we will be showing with each film”, said Landau.
The producer also talked about inclusion. For example in “Avatar: The Way of Water”the protagonists are refugees looking for a safe harbor with people who do not look like them and live differently.
“As filmmakers, we have a responsibility to use our art to challenge people to see things differently,” the producer said.
He added: “Science fiction gives us that opportunity: to be a metaphor for the world we live in without preaching about it. Because if you preach, you only reach those who are already converted.”
The first “Avatar” premiered in 2009 and raised $2.9 billionmaking it the highest-grossing film of all time.
It was re-released in September 2022 in a remastered version in some countries and has already added 60 million dollars more.
