Apple made a controversial change in 2019. In that year, those from Cupertino listed the Crimean peninsula as a region belonging to Russia, for those who lived in the region. However, for the rest of the world the peninsula was detailed as an independent region. Now, however, Apple has made another move on Apple Maps, once again showing Crimea as part of Ukraine… except if you’re in Russia.
After the Russian invasion of the Crimean Peninsula region in 2014, Apple refused to list this area as part of Russia. However, in 2019, Apple Maps updated the territory as a country annex for all services using Apple’s location technology within Russia.
Now, as reported 9to5Mac, those from Cupertino have once again updated Apple Maps; but this time show the Crimea region as part of Ukraine. The Weather application, in fact, also follows the same path, although those users who use Apple’s location technology within Russia will continue to see the territory as part of their country.
Apple is taking action against Russia
In addition to this, Apple has decided to stop the sale of all its products in Russia. Both in authorized agents and in the brand’s online stores, all products appear as “Currently not available“. This same message appears when products are out of stock in Apple Stores.
Of course, all these movements come as reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory. Based on the actions committed by Russia in recent days, companies in the world they have gone to work to sanction the country in various ways. The European Union also vetoed the media Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik, to stop the disinformation and lies published by both.
Now, Ukraine is calling for Russia to be partially disconnected from the internet, although this may be a very bad idea. It remains to be seen how events will continue to progress, but so far more and more companies are suspending operations on Russian territory, and among them we already find Netflix, video games FIFA and more.
