President Andrés Manuel López Obrador indicated that no later than next week he will send to the Congress of the Union his initiative to reform the Electricity Industry Law, in order to strengthen the role of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
It, he added, could include the regulation for the exploitation of lithium, a metal considered “white gold” due to its growing use in the technology sector, specifically in batteries.
“The reform initiative for the electricity industry will be presented next week at the latest and it is being analyzed whether this initiative includes the lithium issue or is done separately. Nothing else is what I can tell you, “he said in his morning conference.
Four months ago, the president said that the Ministry of Economy, headed by Tatiana Clouthier, was analyzing whether to nationalize lithium in Mexico and commented that the Bolivian government was advising the country on the best way to exploit it.
“We are going to have a diagnosis and a proposal soon. With the visit of the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, it was agreed that due to the experience they have in the exploitation of this mineral, that they will help us to analyze what is the most convenient for the Nation, what is the best ”, he said. on that occasion.

In June, the president announced that he would send – in the three years that he has left in office – three reforms: an electoral one to eliminate the multi-member legislators, and modify the INE; another, to incorporate the National Guard into the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), and one more, to “strengthen” the Federal Electricity Commission.
For this, the deputies of Morena in the new Legislature were left with the presidency of the commissions that will dictate the three reforms: the Energy, the Political-Electoral Reform and the Security.
