“Today, in the World Cup final, I just hope that the players on the field and the whole world remember that there is a man and fellow footballer named Amir Nasr, sentenced to death, just for speaking out for women’s rights.” wrote the singer in her account Twitter.
Later, Colombian President Gustavo Petro also advocated in favor of Nasr-Azadani. “And that Iran does not kill football,” he wrote on the same social network, in a congratulatory message to the Argentina team, champion of the tournament.
A footballer is sentenced to death for supporting women’s rights in Iran
This is what we know about the case of this soccer player and his death sentence.
What happened to Amir Nasr-Azadani?
Amir Nasr-Azadani, a defender for the Iranian club Iranjavan and who has come to play in the Under-16s of the national team, began his career as a footballer with the Tehran team, Rah-Ahan, with whom he made his debut in the Iranian Premier League.
Nasr-Azadani was charged by the Iranian regime with a crime called moharebeh (“enmity with God”), punishable by hanging for publicly expressing his support for pro-women’s demonstrations.
This punishment was already suffered by the young Mohsen Shekari and Majid Reza Rahnavard, both 23 years old, for their participation in the protests in defense of women’s rights that broke out in September of this year following the death of Mahsa Amini, who died after being arrested for wearing the veil improperly.
