EFE.- The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) trusted this Thursday in a “new stage of collaboration” after the ratification of Ken Salazar as US ambassador to Mexico.
“At the current juncture, we trust that Ambassador Salazar’s experience on strategic issues such as migration and energy, as well as his willingness to dialogue, will allow to guide the bilateral relationship in an assertive manner,” the association said in a statement.
The statement comes a day after Salazar’s confirmation in the United States Senate, which the Government of Mexico has considered “good news.”
Salazar will assume the embassy in replacement of Christopher Landau, who had been appointed by Donald Trump in 2019 and who left office last January when Joe Biden assumed the presidency.
Biden announced on June 15 the nomination as ambassador to Mexico of the former senator and former secretary of the Interior of the United States, with Mexican roots and whose mother tongue is Spanish.
“At AmCham we agree with Ambassador Salazar that, in addition to the shared challenges, we have important opportunities to build a new stage of collaboration,” said this chamber, which brings together some 1,450 companies nationwide that generate 2.5 million direct jobs.
Salazar promoted immigration reform in 2007 to regulate the millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States, although it did not prosper.
He was also one of the promoters of former President Barack Obama’s energy independence strategy, with a mix of conventional and clean sources.
His arrival in Mexico will occur amid growing pressure from the private sector for the US to act against the new energy policies of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who seeks to “rescue” state companies from the “looting” of foreigners.
Without mentioning this controversy, AmCham stated as one of its priorities “to undertake a global transformation of sustainability for a viable planet, respecting the sovereignty of both countries” and “a boost to the rule of law”.
“We will seek an approach to address shared priorities, among them economic recovery through employment, the promotion of infrastructure, education, tourism and investment; (and) regulatory cooperation for the facilitation of cross-border trade ”, he added.

The arrival of the diplomat also happens while Mexico established itself as the first commercial partner of the United States in the first half of 2021, with an exchange that reached a value of almost 320,000 million dollars, an annual growth of 32%.
“The United States Embassy in Mexico has always been an invaluable ally in promoting a business culture based on free trade, social responsibility and the rule of law,” stressed AmCham.
