The second episode of the Serie Disney Plus Animated What would happen if…? It is a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. But not only because of its importance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but because of something more intelligent, ingenious and brilliant.
Far exceeding its debut chapter, the reinvention of the duology of Guardians of the Galaxy, and even main lines of The Avengers: Endgame, it’s a surprise.
It is to the extent that it celebrates the Marvel Cinematic Universe in space. And also to the character of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) by showing his full potential beyond his native Wakanda. This time, the Easter Eggs are a fast-paced journey through all intergalactic Marvel mythology. But also a demonstration that you are who you are and not where you are that makes the difference.
‘What would happen if…?’ answer intergalactic questions
The first great Easter egg is of course T’Challa’s way of reinventing the story of Black panther. In a brilliant plot decision, What would happen if…? merges the already iconic film with of Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume I. The result is an anthology scene.
In it we see Yondu, Kraglin and Taserface kidnap the wrong boy. In the main line of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Ravagers fulfill the order of the planet god Ego and they take with them Peter Quill. But this time, the new member of the team is T’Challa, who joins the team on his own initiative. In the middle of the crew discussion, Kraglin shows a holographic image of the real Quill, while Yondu berates him if he sees any “resemblance”.
Korath the Pursuer, the most ardent fan
The chapter recreates one of the great scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy. The encounter between the Korath the Pursuer and Star Lord. But this time, the fearsome henchman of Thanos is a big fan of bandit special. As much as to offer to join the team.
T’Challa, a good king on Earth or in space
Of course, one of the high points of the show is to show that it does not matter the place or the time so that the characters continue to retain their essence. In the second chapter of What would happen if…? the premise becomes more obvious. T’Challa turns the Ravagers into a group of heroes.
In fact, their accomplishments add up by the dozen, and at one point, Yondu admits that they are much more like “Robin Leach,” a funny reference to the late host of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. But it is clear that he refers to Robin Hood. It is an immediate parallel to the scene of Yondu asking aloud who Mary Poppins is in Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume II.
But T’Challa’s influence goes beyond a simple change of tone in the intentions of the Ravagers. For the occasion, Thanos is also part of the team. A twist that completely rules out all events of The Avengers: Endgame. How could it be otherwise, it was T’Challa who managed to convince him to desist from his genocidal plan.
“I’m a big enough man to admit when I’m wrong,” says the reformed Thanos. “T’Challa showed me that there was more than one way to reallocate the resources of the universe.”
Nebula, the space pirate from ‘What if …?’
Of course, without the search for the infinity gems there is a lot of information to rewrite in the new episode of What would happen if…?. Among them, the Nebula’s renewed attitude and personality, whose relationship with Thanos changes radically. “I try to get them to go to therapy,” says T’Challa with concern.
Drax, behind the canteen
The announced participation of the Drax character is shorter than can be assumed. Also a fervent admirer of T’Challa thanks him for saving his native Kylos from Kree destruction. So in this timeline your family is alive. “A photograph for my daughter and my wife,” says now-bartender Drax.
A new villain
But T’Challa’s good deeds come at a price. The power vacuum left by Thanos makes Collector Taneleer Tivan the new villain. In fact, it is Tivan and not Thanos who hires the Black Order for his “safety and security.”
A wide collection of objects in ‘What if…?’
The new Tivan collection includes the Malekith dagger from Thor: The Dark World, Hela’s Helmet of Thor: Ragnarok. Thor’s hammer can also be seen, Mjolnir, and Captain America’s shield in a stylish display case. Apparently, The Collector murdered a good number of heroes on his way to power.

Back to earth and to Wakanda
And how could it be otherwise, T’Challa ends up returning to Earth where the King can be seen T’Chaka alive. This makes it clear that the events of Captain America: Civil War have not occurred. Also that it is likely that the King did not have to kill his brother. Which of course leaves open possibilities for various plot lines of interest centered on Wakanda.
And if all of the above weren’t enough, Peter Quill – who lived a normal life and works at a Dairy Queen – meets his father Celestial Ego. “Too bad this could spell the end of the world,” says the Watcher. “But that’s a story for another day.”
