These mummy sausages are actually a fun version of a classic American appetizer: pigs in a blanket. Literally, “pigs in a blanket.” The only difference is that we are going to cut the blanket, which is nothing more than a shortcrust pastry, into strips, to simulate the bandages of a mummy.
As long as they do not go near the oven, it is an ideal recipe to make with children, since there is nothing more than decorate the sausages and, although they are not very pretty, we are going to be able to eat them anyway.
It’s also a snack ideal to distribute among the zombies if, as we did, you suffer the sudden attack of a undead horde.
This recipe is made very quickly. While the oven is heating to 180º C, cut the shortcrust pastry into strips of approximately three millimeters wide. Bear in mind that the dough then expands, so the thinner they are, the more bandages we can put on our mummies and the cooler they will be.
When we have the strips ready, we are rolling these in the sausages, leaving only a hole at the height of what will be the eyes of the mummies. There are various techniques to make the eyes. The easiest thing is to make some small holes with the help of a toothpick and fill them with a sauce of our choice that is dark. They can also be added when taking the sausages out of the oven, using, for example, sesame seeds.
Once our mummy sausages are ready, we place them on a baking tray, on parchment paper, so that they do not stick, and we paint them with beaten egg. When the oven reaches the right temperature, we introduce them and bake for about 15 minutes, until the dough turns golden. Serve immediately.
With what to accompany the mummy sausages
The ideal is to serve the mummies together with some sauce. We can put ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise or barbecue sauce. I would also bet on a hot sauce, be it a good homemade sriracha or a classic brava sauce. And to enjoy!
