Pedro Tello Villagrán, an Economics consultant, points out that he does not have an exact answer as to whether it was the government, Citibanamex or Larrea himself who decided to reverse the bank’s acquisition process, but what is certain is that this exposes a scenario of discrepancies between the “copper king” and the Federal Executive. A thread that continues to be tense due to the occupation of a 120-kilometre section of the Ferrosur railway.
No monetary compensation
Although President Andrés Manuel López Obrador asserted that Ferrosur will not receive million-dollar compensation for the seizure of railways, on Wednesday of this week he indicated that they are already in conversations aimed at fixing what happened.
“Yes, an agreement will be reached, I hope, but it is not money. It is permission to pass and review concessions, on the same roads that are in the hands of Grupo México”, added the president.
From Villagrán’s perspective, there are still several unknowns that must be resolved before put an end to this story. One of them is the explosion at the Pasta de Conchos coal mine in 2006, in which 65 people lost their lives, as well as the spill of 40,000 cubic meters of acidulated copper sulfate leachate into the Sonora River that occurred in 2014 and affected to more than 22,000 people from seven municipalities.
“They will be one of those stories that will hardly be told publicly, but trying to make a chronology, one can guess where the matter is going,” he adds.
