The president of the Andalusian government, Juan Manuel Moreno, described the attack as “terrible and heartbreaking.”
“A sacristan has been murdered and at least one other priest has been injured in an attack that has taken place in Algeciras,” he explained, before calling to avoid hasty conclusions and untimely reactions.
“Prudence, the facts are being investigated,” he claimed.
The Spanish Church, through the general secretary of the Episcopal Conference, Francisco César García Magán, regretted the events.
“It is with pain that I have received the news of the events in Algeciras. In these sad moments of suffering, we join the pain of the family of the victims and of the Cadiz diocese and ask the God of life and peace for the prompt recovery of the wounded”, explained García Magán.
The latest jihadist attacks in Spain date back to August 2017 and occurred in Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils, both in Catalonia. The attacks, claimed by the Islamic State group, left 16 dead and 140 injured.
The three survivors of the cell were sentenced to eight, 46 and 53 years in prison.
