There is no doubt that smartwatches have been a great revolution in every way. Now we have on our wrist not only the possibility of knowing the time, but also of being able to monitor our sleep, our physical activity, the calories we spend, etc.
After Suunto released the “Suunto 9 Peak” in mid-2021, earlier this year it presented us with the watch that we are going to review below, the “Suunto 5 Peak”. The difference that we can find between these two is that the Suunto 5 Peak has a smaller resolution and screen size, does not have a touch screen (something that I have particularly missed), it does not measure blood oxygen and it does not have a compass. Therefore it also has a lower price.
Suunto 5 Peak: Technical characteristics
The first thing we notice is that in terms of physical design it is very similar to Suunto 5 and Suunto 9 Peak. We can see a screen with a resolution of 218×218 and a size of 1.1”. The bezel material is stainless steel; the material of the housing and lens is plastic; finally, the material of the strap is silicone, whose sizes are 120-200 mm (it has a spare strap of 215 mm) and with a width of 22 mm.
In terms of weight and measurements, it is a very light watch with a weight of 39 g and with very discreet measurements of 43 x 43 x 12.9 mm. It really is a watch quite comfortable thanks to the silicone strap that adapts quite well to our wrist and weighs so little It is not cumbersome to have it on all day.
We found five buttons, which we will talk about later; 3 on the right side and two on the left side.
The battery life It is something that we liked a lot since you do not have to be too careful to load it if you are not an Ultra Trail athlete who requires GPS during your training. In my case, I have used it on a day-to-day basis to monitor my weight training, my heart rate and observe the time, and the battery life has been almost a week
On the other hand, if we are going to use the Suunto 5 Peak to monitor and use the GPS every time we go out on the road, the battery could be over in a couple of days (although everything will depend on the use that is given to the watch, as is obvious).
Finally, regarding the battery, if we only want it to know the time, monitor sleep and something else, the battery will last us more than a weeksomething that is really very comfortable.
It has several satellite systems which are: GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, QZSS, BEIDOU for a best geolocation when making a route.
Suunto has enabled power submerge the watch up to 30 mso it is perfect for sports such as swimming in a pool or open sea and diving at shallow depths, something that I consider quite positive.
It allows connectivity between devices thanks to the fact that it has Bluetooth Smart and, therefore, we can receive notifications from our watch let us get to the phone.

How to start using Suunto 5 Peak and the app
The Suunto 5 Peak smartwatch has impressed us, in part, by how easy it is to handle since, although it has 5 buttons and normally smartwatches have less, it is very basic and the moment we touch it a little we already know how to handle ourselves in the world of this watch.
We can perfectly start using it as soon as we take it out of the box, but we recommend that you download the Suunto app and link the clock to the app so that, if you want to review all the monitoring of the clock, be as easy as accessing the app and you don’t have to be touching buttons.
In addition, the Suunto app offers us an explanation of the training progression values:
- Physical Preparation: Describes our long-term training load. It offers a trend line of our long-term physical preparation.
- Fatigue: Describes our short-term training load: how have our recent training been. If we train more than usual, our fatigue will increase faster than the level of physical preparation.
- Form: Compare our long-term training and short-term training to show to what extent we are adapted to training load.
From the app (on the watch too), we can access a calendar in order to view the sports sessions you have done throughout the week, month or year.
Finally, comment that the app is very easy to use and nothing messy, giving a plus of comfort to the user.
What does Suunto 5 Peak have
When we turn on the watch, we see that the default watch face has the digital time, a small face with the analog time, the date, and the steps taken. Even so, the spheres can be customized in settings and there are even 12 different types of spheres.
heart rate monitoring
Heart rate is something very important to consider because it allows us to know that our heart rate is at optimal levels. has been related a low resting heart rate with better cardiovascular health, so if we notice that our heart rate has been high throughout the day, it’s time to fix it.
Rest monitoring
This clock function is essential if we want to know if we are having quality sleep. Suunto 5 Peak gives us information on hours slept and a weekly average.
It is important that throughout the week we add an average of seven or eight hours per week to be able to perform in any area of our life and to have good health.
Training monitoring
Training monitoring is also important. Vital importance, especially for obtaining the training values discussed above. During training monitoring you can see calories burned at the top left, heart rate in the middle and average heart rate at the top right. In addition, we also have a retrospective map of our heart rate throughout the training.
What else does it offer us?
The up and down buttons on the right side of the watch are used to cycle through the different functions that the watch has which from top to bottom are: Settings, stopwatch, diary, navigation, exercise, watch face, heart rate, recovery measurement, steps, training done during the week, sleep monitoring and fitness instructions.
The center button is used to enter each of the watch’s functions. For example, in the exercise section, if you click on the central button, what it does is give us a choice between the different sports that we are going to do and start monitoring our physical activity. On the other hand, if we enter the dream zone, it allows us to see our weekly average.
The button on the bottom left is used to go back and the button on the top left is used to enter different menus within the different functions of the watch, like this example:
As you can see in the steps, the number that has been done during the day appears first and if we click on the button on the top left it shows us the calories burned.
GPS is very well integrated since it allows even in the Suunto app to import or create your own route and connect it to the clock so that we do not have to be checking the mobile screen to follow the path. Also, inside the app when we make a route we can change the heat map. The thermal map is an option that allows us to review which are the best areas to go running, walking, cycling, etc. The GPS allows you to activate or deactivate an option called “Turn by Turn” to follow orders from the clock.
And not only can this watch help us in our running training, but also in our weight training, which is what I have been trying, snowboarding, cycling, swimming, yoga or pilates, boxing, etc.
Suunto 5 Peak, Vitónica’s opinion
If we are looking for a watch to monitor our training and be able to go out on the road (whether walking, cycling, etc.), it really is this is our watch. It is true that it does not have some options of the Suunto 9 Peak such as a touch screen or compass, but when we talk about performance, these are factors that will not influence and raise the price of the watch. It does not have oxygen measurement, but it is not something that is going to generate a difference of monitoring our performance so high.
Yes, we are amateur athletes or people who seek to introduce new habits healthy lifestyles, Suunto 5 Peak is a great option, especially since we tend to overestimate our physical activity and thanks to the fact that it is capable of counting steps and calories burned, we will know exactly what we have been doing throughout the day and there will be no way to fool us.
Finally, tell you that the Suunto 5 Peak is on sale and we can currently get it for 249 euros €299so don’t miss out on this great opportunity Suunto is giving you to try out its incredible smartwatch.
