The PS5 went up in price last week, but its production and availability issues haven’t changed. It is still an impossible mission to get hold of Sony’s next-generation console, and the truth is that, at the moment, it doesn’t seem like it will change.
However, everything seems to indicate that a new revision of the console, like the one that arrived last year, can streamline manufacturing processes and speed up the production of the device. An easier-to-manufacture PS5 means greater availability in stores.
The japanese retailers have revealed that Sony will release a third PS5 model in the coming weeks, with the new model, dubbed the CFI-1200, launching in Japan on September 15 (the same day as the price increase in Japan). This is a minor revision, changing some internal components to improve certain parts.
However, this revision could include a key improvement that speeds up the production of the PS5. It is speculated that the next PS5 model it will use a new 6nm AMD chipset. Because this is a newer chip, its availability should be much better and it will allow Sony to produce PS5 consoles at a much faster rate.
Same PS5, different processor
This does not mean that it is a new console or that it offers new features. It would be simply a change in one of the components to speed up the availability, the biggest drag on the PS5 since its launch in 2020.
And it is that although the chipset is quite different from the current CPU, a custom 7nm AMD, no major changes in performance are expected, since Sony would have planned the change in the chipset thinking only of production efficiency. In fact, the 6nm version has already been rumored for several months:
In fact, if we take into account the times, it seems quite plausible. The last revision of the PS5 was last year around this time. The CFI-1102A model arrived just before the start of fall, albeit with much minor changes. Reduced weight by 300 grams thanks to changes in the power supply. Also, changed to a new screw for the console bracket that didn’t require the use of a screwdriver. Unlike the original model.
