What would happen if…? premiered this week on Disney Plus and it promises not only an amazing tour of new Marvel stories, but also to make an interesting review among its better known alternative universes. As if that weren’t enough, it will bring surprising storytelling and new characters, including Captain Carter. The multiverse is here and it is much more amazing and rich than you thought.
One of the stories that has generated the greatest expectation is that of first episode, of which we already share our recap. The plot that opens the Marvel Multiverse will be a new approach to captain america, or in any case, to its context. And, unsurprisingly, Peggy Carter has a prominent participation.
For this version of the story, the captain will receive the serum from the super soldier instead of Steve Rogers. The result is that, instead of Captain America, who will carry the shield will be Peggy, better known in What would happen if…? as Captain Carter.
The variation on the original story of the quintessential great patriotic hero is also what appears to be the beginning of something larger. As it has transpired, the participation of Captain Carter will extend to several chapters (and seasons) of What would happen if…? in the future.
It has even been rumored that Captain Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) would have a special participation in the sequel to Doctor Strange. Whatever the case, it is clear that the characters and situations of the first Marvel animated series will impact its film version.
Captain Carter, a heroine about to be born
The origin of Captain Carter that we will see on screen is a combination of two different sources. Or at least two completely independent references that sustain the character.
On the one hand, it is not the first time that a character has carried a shield and has become an emblem of England. The call Captain brittany (Brian Braddock) first appeared on Captain Britain #1 in October 1976. It was a work signed by Chris Claremont, artist Alan Davis, and writer Alan Moore.
The character, who in its first volumes was intended exclusively for the British comic book market, has little relationship to Steve Rogers. In fact, his extraordinary powers come exclusively from the world of magic, which makes him a more complicated character. According to his origin story, his abilities were bestowed upon him by the Wizard Merlin and his daughter Roma. As if that weren’t enough, you have a duty to enforce the laws of Great Britain.
On the other hand, the possibility of an alternative history of Captain America, is in the limited series of comics Bullet points. The five issues published in 2007, with a script by JM Straczynski and illustrations by Tommy Lee Edwards, explore alternative worlds of Marvel. And it is precisely there, where the version of the world in which Steve Rogers’ Captain America would not have existed is born.
The big question to the alternate universes now has an answer
Bullet points narrates what would have happened if the murder of Dr. Erksine had occurred the day before Steve Rogers was inoculated with the super-soldier’s serum. Of course, the event would prevent the arrival (creation) of Captain America. As if that weren’t enough, the bullet that kills the doctor also kills Benjamin Parker, Peter Parker’s future uncle.
Without the existence of a patriotic symbol embodied in the supersoldier, the US government considers other emergency options. One of them is the iron man project, which for the occasion is much more sinister than the one already known. To keep the country safe, a volunteer must undergo body armor surgery organically. In the end, it is Steve Rogers who offers himself for such a sacrifice and thanks to his help, the country manages to defeat the Nazi threat.
Date of high in Disney Plus now and save thanks to the annual subscription, with which you can enjoy its entire catalog of series and movies. Enjoy access to the latest releases and to the catalog of Star. You’ll also be able to watch Marvel and Star Wars content, Pixar’s great animated films, and National Geographic documentaries.
The beginning of the story has an obvious parallel with the synopsis that has transcended with the first chapter of What would happen if…?, which stars Captain Carter. For now, it is unclear if the multiverse will include the rest of the consequences of Erskine’s untimely death. These include a possible transformation of Peter Parker into a Hulk-like creature and the death of Captain Rogers, trying to stop him.
Undoubtedly, What would happen if…? It will be a unique opportunity to do an in-depth review of the vast Marvel mythology. And especially, the alternative lines that fill his universe. What will the Serie of Disney Plus for the Marvelita Cinematic Universe? It only remains to wait.
