Some, such as atopic dermatitis, are still incurable and care is of vital importance to control flare-ups and prevent them from affecting other aspects of physical and mental health.
In Mexico, the Senate declared November 27 as the National Day of atopic dermatitis, a chronic and inflammatory skin disease, caused by various factors that alter the immune system and which is considered one of the most frequent skin diseases. .
This condition, which significantly affects people’s quality of life, is characterized by dry, irritated, and flaking skin, which evolves into bouts of intense itching and can even lead to depression. It can occur at all ages, although it is more frequent in children under five years of age. In adults, its presentation can be with more severe outbreaks, so treatment is less effective and prolonged.
One in five Mexicans has been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and it is very likely that many more are affected without knowing it. The diagnosis requires a high clinical suspicion, as well as the correct interpretation of the physical findings on the skin, for which the training of the first contact media is essential.
There are also challenges regarding treatment. A study recently presented by Pfizer, regarding knowledge and access to medical dermatology care, indicates that current treatments have not been able to satisfy all the needs of patients, due to low therapeutic efficacy, pharmacological safety and lack of financial access. .
