Instagram is adding a small but important feature to its app: the ability to apply subtitles on the videos that appear in the feed. This feature, which has been available for months on TikTok and other social networks, such as Twitter, will allow people who are deaf or hard of hearing to understand what is happening in the video.
Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, has confirmed what subtitles on videos will be generated automatically. That is, creators will not need to use third-party platforms that perform this same function or enter text manually when creating a Reel. The subtitles, in this case, are created by algorithms capable of transcribing what the person is saying, so the interpretation may not be really accurate in some cases. In fact, this feature is currently available in selected languages. It is expected that in the coming months, when the function adapts greater precision, it will be available in new languages.
Users, on the other hand, will automatically see captions when viewing a Reel or any other playable content on Instagram. These will be displayed at the bottom of the video, but can be deactivated at any time. To do this, it is only necessary to click on the top button of the clip and access the option called “Manage subtitles”.
The news that are coming to Instagram
Subtitles on Instagram videos are not only an extremely useful feature for people with hearing problems. It is also for those users who they access the platform and choose to play the content without volume. This, moreover, is not the only function that the Meta-owned social network is implementing in its application. Recently, Instagram added a button to like stories. These, unlike posts, are not shown to all users, but can only be seen by the person who posted the story. Instagram Stories Likes also have no count, but the user can see who has clicked on the heart button by accessing the views list.
On the other hand, the CEO of Instagram confirmed that the app was working on the ability to switch between different feeds. Currently, the app displays a home page with posts from users we follow, as well as people or accounts that might be of interest to us. The images and videos, in addition, do not appear in chronological order, but are displayed dynamically. The two new additional feeds will allow you to see only the posts of users that you follow or those that you have marked as “favorites” (friends, family, etc.). These two feeds will be able to show you in chronological order.
