We currently live in a world where every day there are more people who dare to start and lead a business without having any type of tool that gives them the security that they will succeed in that broad business market. Given this, there are various recommendations and manuals that experts have disseminated with the sole purpose that entrepreneurs achieve success, as an example the study called The Effective Founders Project (The Effective Founder Project)conducted by Google, where he listed the top seven effective leadership strategies.
We cannot talk about entrepreneurship without being clear about the concept of effective leadership, which goes hand in hand with a leader, who is nothing more than a person who stands out and is respected within an organization.
In this sense, specialists define effective leadership as one that achieves results based on building, designing and implementing projects aimed at the growth of the organization. Unlike a leader, an effective leader does not seek his personal success but rather takes charge of the situation and leads it to a successful conclusion. So to carry it out, he gets other people to participate and work on the project, since the goal is the success of the organization.
A study of World Economic Forumspecified that 86 percent of those surveyed agree on the existence of a lack of leadership in their organizations by managers. Likewise, the same report identified the lack of leadership as one of the greatest current challenges.
For its part, the Talent Survey published by Aon Hewitt I affirm that only 12 percent of those surveyed consider their leaders effective in meeting business objectives and only 7 percent believe that they meet the task of retaining talent.
Another alarming data was the one thrown by the study Global Leader Forecast 2021, prepared by DDIexplained that the strength of succession banking, which is the group of people who can guide the company in the future, is falling. The report notes that globally, only 11 percent of HR professionals say they have strong candidates for leadership positions.
In Mexico, on the other hand, 54 percent of companies believe there is strong succession banking, the same study indicates.
How can we achieve effective leadership?
Nowadays, many of us ask ourselves this question. Given this, the study The Effective Founders Project (The Effective Founder Project), conducted by Google among more than 900 founders of startup that have been successful in 40 different countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and the United States, answered the question.
The most famous search engine in the world analyzed the habits of the most successful entrepreneurs and contrasted them with those who have struggled a bit to keep your business afloat, guiding your startup towards stability and growth.
1. Treat people like volunteers
The study revealed that the founders of the startup The most successful women inspire their team and manage to share their vision and goals with them to the degree that they feel like their own. “Create a monopoly on talent by understanding the psychology of your employees,” the report says.
“These studies suggest that transformational leadership leads to positive performance outcomes such as productivity, task persistence, job satisfaction, among others,” he says.
2- Protect your team from distractions
Likewise, the report explains that the most effective leaders invest their time in what really matters and do not get distracted by new ideas or projects. That’s why if the leader is focused, the team will be too. “Set clear goals and priorities to build momentum for your team, which in turn fuels better performance and morale,” he says.
In that same vein, the study explains that to build a team that does amazing work, you need leadership that clearly communicates expectations and achieves high-quality results across the team.
3. Minimize unnecessary micromanagement
Another key to effective leadership is knowing that if you hired someone for what they know how to do, let them operate, since you must learn that some situations require micromanagement, but not all, and the leader must know how to identify them.
“The most effective leaders aim to delegate work to scale both themselves and their businesses. Our data suggests that micromanagement can be a fatal flaw for CEOs,” the report reads.
4. Invite disagreement
Generate an environment of trust and respect so that your collaborators can express their opinion freely, Even if this is not aligned with yours, it can make a difference in a work team.
“Our data suggests that founders consistently undervalue giving teams a chance to voice their opinions, while employees highly value it. Encourage open team dialogue early and often.
5. Preserves interpersonal fairness
Open and assertive communication between your partners is important so that things can be said and that everyone has mutual expectations clear in advance.
“The most effective co-founders openly discuss and document what they expect from each other and constantly check for interpersonal fairness: Do you both feel the expectations are fair?” he says.
6. Keep up with the experience
Keeping up to date with everything that happens in the world and in your industry is one of the keys to effective leadership. If you intend to guide a team successfully, it is important that you keep up to date with your business, that is why you must dedicate time to it, training yourself.
“Leaders need to know enough about each role to hire the right people and help build their team. 93 percent of the most effective founders have the technical expertise to effectively manage work.”
7. Overcome discouragement
The most successful startup founders are often less self-confident than the less successful ones. Google recommends not taking things personally and seeking contacts with other entrepreneurs and businessmen who can provide feedback. “While most would expect self-confidence to grow over time, our data suggests that the most effective founders are not as confident as the least effective. Build a support system and know how to ask for help to overcome doubts”.
In conclusion, business leadership is a skill that anyone can develop, it is a management style that is based on the creation of a collaborative structure with correct internal communication from which your collaborators are motivated.
