Do you know who it is? (a season)
Based on the novel of the same name by Karin Slaughter, Tony Colette stars in this high caliber suspense story. On eight chapters available on Netflix, Andy’s (Bella Heathcote) life is turned upside down when he discovers that his mother (Colette) is hiding something he never imagined.
But what might seem like a journey through the past or, in any case, a look at unspeakable secrets, soon turns into something more. The program is a combination of action, but also of a spooky tour through violence, cruelty and fear.
The worst roommate imaginable (a season)
This docuseries covers the worst collective paranoia, showing all kinds of sinister versions of the abstract idea of a bad neighbor. From a serial killer that went unnoticed for more than twenty years until terrifying and violent tenants. The argument analyzes real cases where the domestic space becomes a place of confrontation and terror.
As is often the case in true crime Netflix, the narration uses a mixture of fiction and documentary to narrate the cases. A detail that you would like to know? It’s a Blumhouse production. So terror and suspense is guaranteed.
The Sinner (4 seasons)
What started out as a lucky experiment in plotting crime and guilt has turned into a full-fledged phenomenon. The Sinner shows a completely new perspective on guilt, pain, fear and violence. As if that weren’t enough, it also links the idea of crime to deeper and more complex ideas. The result is a raw and brutal exploration about the intimate terrors as opposed to the intimate, with an atmosphere of astonishing level.
Of course, as the seasons progress, the premise loses some of its freshness and solidity. But it is nonetheless of enormous interest and intelligence, even in several of its lowest moments.
clickbait (a season)
This chilling take on exposure, fame, recognition and virality is also a splendid suspense story. One that becomes increasingly complicated and breathless, through the attentive look of the script on its characters. Little by little, what appears to be a twisted plan for revenge turns out to be something more. Also, a sinister conception of the great platforms of social networks and their power over collective opinion.
If you are looking for one of the many heiresses of BlackMirrorthe great success of Netflix, this is your best option.
marcella (3 seasons)
Powerful, smart and well-constructed, this story about a police officer with a complicated past is sinister in its take on crime. It is not a procedural to use —although there is something of that—, but a singular journey through the conception of inner darkness. Taken together, the three seasons of the series take a careful look at the perception of cruelty and violence through a new lens. Which gives a rare dimension both to its central character and to those who accompany him on his journey through the world of crime.
