The premiere of the sixth season of Peaky Blinders in some parts of the world has made some things clear. The first, that Tommy Shelby will deal with the failure and persistent harassment of Gran’s image. The other, what the series progresses towards the slippery slope of having to explain how and who betrayed Shelby. And especially, where the possible answers lead.
How big is the rift around the inner circle of much of today’s audience’s favorite gangster? What can mean that fall in the disaster of loyalty, the main heritage of the Shelby?
The first and second episode of the sixth season of Peaky Blinders I had barely delved into either topic. Of course, she already showed her cards and explained to the audience a good part of the loose ends in the fifth season.
Shelby now faces the consequences of the failure of her plan and a reshaping of the world around her. In addition, it is a new form of stalking power. One with so many edges and strange versions that the great unanswered question remains intact. Will Shelby be able to fight back against a threat that surpasses her?
After all, Shelby always has a plan. Only in the fifth season of Peaky Blinders the plan failed for the first time. Also, there are adjustments in the substantial fabric of his family and his ambitions, that of his accomplices and his enemies. How will that affect the ending of the story? Will it lead the characters to a total fall into darkness? Could Shelby’s failure just be a spur to redouble her efforts to succeed?
The sixth season of Peaky Blinders even move your chips carefully over the complicated board of the plot and nothing seems to be clear. What is clear is that you will need to answer three questions of considerable importance to build a satisfactory conclusion. Will you be able to do it? You should at least try.
Will Michael Gray open the battle fronts against the Peaky Blinders?
This is a complicated question with no immediate answer. As you may recall, Michael Gray made it clear in the season five finale of Peaky Blinders that he wished to take control of the group at a family gathering. In fact, one of the great phrases of the now absent Polly was to predict a disaster in the making.
“There will be a war and one of you will die, but I can’t say which one,” he told Tommy and Michael. Will it happen? Will the classic Shelby family unit finally fall apart?
For now, everything seems to point to no, especially after Tommy’s ruse that made Michael a virtual pawn. One that will allow him to reach the spheres of power in which the enigmatic Jack Nelson finds himself. For now, it is only clear that being in-laws of a man of such power, Michael and Tommy will have to act as accomplices. And dealing with the harshness and ambitions, as well as the thirst for revenge, of Polly Gray’s son.
However, it is most likely that Michael will end up reacting, which will put Tommy in a difficult situation.
What can we expect from Alfie Solomons?
To the surprise of all fans, the final chapter of the fifth season of Peaky Blinders, revealed that Alfie Solomons was alive. More scarred and much more mysterious, he’s back as part of the Shelbys’ future.
Of course, this is a key point in understanding the failure of the plan to assassinate Oswald Mosley. And although for once Alfie had nothing to do with the plans and maneuvers that led to the plan failing, his return is not entirely fortuitouseither. Or at least, it didn’t seem to be in the fifth season of Peaky Blindersalthough little is known about what role it could play in the current one.
With the betrayal of the Irish Republican Army, Tommy in the midst of an existential crisis due to Polly’s death, Alfie may play an essential role. Will it be the link to revenge that Tommy knows he owes to Michael? The support in the midst of a moment of weakness for the Shelbys? Or, on the contrary – and without a doubt, the most probable -, architect of a new betrayal?
There is still nothing clear about it. But what is clear is that the return of Tom Hardy’s character is not fortuitous nor was it part of an unexpected turn, gimmicky in Peaky Blinders. Almost nothing is in the series.
Will Tommy avenge Aunt Polly Gray’s death?
For context: actress Helen McCrory died of cancer before she could reprise her role as Polly Gray. So the argument of Peaky Blinders he had to analyze his absence from an essential point of view: How to highlight its importance? The character was one of the central elements of the series for six seasons. So his disappearance has become a dilemma for writers and producers. How to pose something similar?
The first episode of the sixth season of Peaky Blinders it showed the death of Polly Gray, but it also left open the gap of its possible consequences. Michael, on the verge of betrayal, with an unbalanced Tommy and the need for revenge. Will Tommy do it? Will Michael confront the leader of the Shelbys?
For now, there are no easy answers for all the plot lines that Polly’s death rocked. But one thing is clear: the season will show the probably deadly rivalry between Tommy Michael. Where will the war lead? It only remains to wait.
