A survey of 200,000 people in 20 countries in the region reveals that China and Russia have the worst image in Latin America.
The survey was published by Latinobarometer and it shows the rejection that exists in Latin America in relation to the countries governed by Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, respectively.
Beyond the general result, there are very different nuances in each of the countries.
For example, Russia has a much better image in Bolivia and Mexico, something that does not happen in Brazil, where Putin has very low levels of acceptance.
Contrary to what happens with Russia and China, The United States and Germany are the countries with the best image in the region.
It should be noted that the survey was conducted in 2021, prior to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which may have caused the results to vary.
Likewise, it shows that there was already some rejection of Russia, even without knowing the outcome that led to the armed conflict.
In Latin America, the country governed by Putin has only a 17 percent positive image.
China, meanwhile, has a positive image of 19 percent of the survey that included 10 Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
What do they think in Mexico and other countries of the image of Russia and China
Among Bolivians, Russia has the best image: 29 percent.
Mexicans are second in this opinion: 28 percent of those consulted have a positive image of Russia.
In Brazil, by contrast, only 4 percent have a good image of the country led by Putin.
The United States, meanwhile, is the country that Latin America sees with the best image. 47 percent think so. The second is Germany, with 43 percent.
Among the Venezuelans surveyed, the country with the highest number of positive opinions is the United States, with 66 percent.
In Colombia and Argentina, Germany is the one with the best image: 50 percent think that way.
The survey was commissioned by the Fiedrich Ebert Stiftung Foundation and the magazine Nueva Sociedad / Grupo Dipalogo y Paz.
Democracy or not?
On a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 expresses that “it is not a democracy” and 10 that “it is a full democracy”, Russia obtained 5.1 points, while China, just 4 points.
USA and France got 7.7 points each.
When asked which country is the best development model, the most repeated response in Latin America was the United States (44 percent).
On the other side of the results was Russia, with 15 percent.
On the other hand, the US is for Latin Americans the country with the greatest influence on the region’s economy: 56 percent believe that.
When people were asked what nation they would like to live in, other than the region, 39 percent mentioned countries in Europe, especially Spain and Italy. 25 percent preferred the US or Canada.
The most repeated concern: extreme poverty. 72 percent spoke of this.
Second, climate change (71 percent) and third, human rights violations (65 percent).
