Today was one of its big days for Xiaomi in so far this year. The Chinese manufacturer has held the traditional annual Lei Jun talk in its home country and has taken the opportunity to make some presentations. Among them, the Xiaomi Mix 4 with the screen hidden under the screen and the new Mi Pad 5, which has come with a surprise.
The new tablets not only mean the return of the Chinese brand to the tablet market after three long years of waiting, they also mean the splitting of its proprietary layer. As Apple did a couple of seasons ago with iOS and iPadOS (now in version 15), now MIUI also has two aspects: MIUI for mobiles and MIUI for Pad for tablets.
MIUI for tablets is already a reality
The Mi Pad 5 and Mi Pad 5 Pro have landed in the Chinese market complying almost strictly with each and every one of their previous leaks. Like those who spoke, for example, that the screen would have 120Hz, that the processor would be a Snapdragon 870 (something that has been partially fulfilled, since the normal Mi Pad 5 chip is the Snapdragon 860) or that would have a custom stylus.
But among all the specifications offered by the brand, Xiaomi has taken advantage of a few seconds to slide that the new Mi Pad 5 do not have a normal MIUI incorporated but one adapted for tablets. And of course, such a change had to receive a specific name and that name is none other than MIUI for Pad. Although almost no information has been offered in this regard, the little time that MIUI for Pad has been talked about on stage has served to provide a few data.
For example, we know that it is a MIUI customized and adapted to large diagonal screens like the 11-inch LCD that each of the new Mi Pad 5 carries. It is also a system focused on productivity and that will allow, among other things, run multiple apps at the same time and in the form of floating apps, resembling MIUI to the operating system of a laptop or Apple’s iPadOS. But we also have a layer prepared for the new Xiaomi optical pencils and that will gain functionalities to have even more specific uses. In the style of Samsung’s S Pen in the Note, for example.
It looks like, the new MIUI for Pad is born from MIUI 12.5 and it will initially arrive on board the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5. We will have time to test it when the time comes, although, unfortunately, it seems that neither of the two tablets is going to leave China officially. We will see how long it takes to sink our teeth into the new MIUI for Pad specific for tablets. We’ll keep a close eye on him.
