- In Mexico, a title of Medical Surgeon does NOT mean that the professional has the faculty to perform surgery.
- The title of “Medical Surgeon” continues to be issued in the country’s more than 80 medical schools and colleges to nearly 9,000 graduates each year.
- This textual tradition in the issuance of the title causes countless cases of serious complications, mutilations and deaths on a daily basis.
The title of Surgeon that currently covers the exercise of the medical profession is the name most commonly used by schools and colleges of medicine to signify the knowledge and the type and quality of activities covered by the degrees they issue.
Today medical schools and colleges offer three types of degrees: that of Bachelor of Medicine, that of Medical Surgeon and that of Medical Surgeon and Obstetrician, without considering those of Homeopathic Physician and Homeopathic Medical Surgeon that correspond to a different modality of medical theory and practice.
However, according to research, the title of “Surgeon” it must go, as it is clearly wrong and encourages unethical activities.

Why should the title of “Medical Surgeon” disappear in Mexico?
In Mexico, that someone has the title “Medical Surgeon” does NOT mean that they are prepared or fit to carry out any operation or surgery.
However, the title of “Surgeon” it continues to be issued by the country’s more than 80 medical schools and colleges to nearly 9,000 graduates each year. Document that, when registered in the Ministry of Health and in the General Directorate of Professions of the Ministry of Public Education. It legally authorizes whoever has it to practice medicine and surgery in Mexico, even if they know nothing about the latter.
What daily causes innumerable cases of serious complications, mutilations and deaths.
If a surgeon with good training makes mistakes, you can imagine what happens when patient to be “operated” by these “Medical Surgeons”, that without knowledge in the matter, protected by an incorrect title, perform surgery with disastrous results for their naive victims. Despite extensive discussion of this issue at the Academy, nothing has come of it.
During the last 30 years, on countless occasions, surgery professors have denounced this anomaly before the authorities of the Ministry of Health
and the General Directorate of Professions of the Ministry of Public Education, without receiving a response, it seems that the officials of these dependencies are afraid of changing a deeply rooted custom in Mexico, by issuing the title of “Medical Surgeon”.
And you, do you think it should disappear to shape another title?
