One difference between the Batman and Batgirl costumes is the absence of Barbara’s cape-roll eyes, here’s why.
By Alex Jaffe
They say that the eyes are the windows of the soul. And part of what makes Batman such a symbol of fear to his enemies is the idea that, as an entity, he’s unknowable. The white lenses that hide her eyes lend credence to this illusion. However, the Batgirls throughout history stand for something else: expressing themselves through the cloak. A Batgirl’s eyes could be said to show through her costume because they represent her human face.
In the case of the first “Bat-Girl,” Betty Kane, both she and her aunt Kathy Kane, the original Batwoman, eschewed contact lenses for what, in hindsight, were probably Comics Code reasons.
Both Batwoman and Bat-Girl were introduced in the comics to add a female presence to the Dynamic Duo’s lives, and hiding their female eyes behind those masks would serve to dilute that purpose as much as showing Bruce’s eyes through the hood would hurt. theirs.
Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl Kept Her Eyes Without White Lenses
Later, in the case of Barbara Gordon, the lack of glasses suggests a homemade quality to her suit. It took Bruce Wayne millions of dollars to become the next-generation crime fighter that he is, but all it took for Barbara was a little cloth, a sewing needle, and the will to bring some light to a dark city.
Of course, there’s also the fact that Barbara Gordon was created for the third season of the 1960s Batman TV series, and on that series no one wore white contact lenses. So the costume designed for Barbara in the series became the new standard for Batgirl in the comics and has stayed that way through countless reimaginings of her costume and that of Stephanie Brown as Batgirl after her.
(You may have noticed that I’ve left out my favorite Batgirl, Cassandra Cain, whose eyes aren’t usually visible through her hood. This is because – as Barbara and Bruce have attested – of all the members of the greater Batfamily, Cass is most similar to Batman).
