Eternals arrives to make history. First of all because it is the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM) Directed by a woman, Oscar winner Chloé Zhao. And second for introducing us to a series of new characters in the cinema, but with a broad journey in the world of Marvel comics, the Eternals.
Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, they will arrive at the cinema surrounded by a cast full of stars who adapt the comics. Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harrington … These names are just the beginning of the long etcetera of Marve’s new proposall. With a look at the trailer you can see that we are not exaggerating.
The Eternals 1. The Day of the Gods
Before entering the matter, we will explain that the Eternals are a race of children of gods (immortal obviously) who live on earth to protect us from the Deviants, a race of monsters, but without intervening in the events that plague her, such as Thanos’ finger snap that made half the population disappear.
As we have seen in the trailer, the Earth is attacked again by these monsters, and thus we will meet not only the Eternals, but the images let us see some Celestials (if your curiosity is piqued) in Espinof they explain to us in great detail who are those beings that some confused with Galactus).
It opens next November 5 And since we don’t want you to miss anything, we are going to tell you who is who in this race that came to Earth thousands of years ago and will now play a leading role in the future of humanity. This is everything the comics and the trailer tell us.
Ikaris (Richard Madden)
The actor of Game of Thrones and Bodyguard, brings Ikaris to life. The first time Ikaris appears in the comics he has a covert identity and poses as a human Ike Harris. He has the ability to fly, super strength, and can launch cosmic energy with his eyes (very Superman-style), as well as being able to teleport. He is one of the most powerful Eternals, and you will be part of a loving threesome that will give a lot to talk about.
Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani)
Most of the Eternals seek to go unnoticed (they think they are beings with thousands of years of life, they do not care to be known too much), but not Kingo. He is a Bollywood star whose ability is to manipulate energy with his hands., but who is also a master swordsman whose sword was created by Phastos, another character from Eternals.
In the comics, he has super strength, flight, energy projection and the ability for molecular manipulation, although he always prefers to fight in the more traditional samurai style, which shows his deeper connection with humanity as Sersi does. It will be played by Kumail Nanjiani, whose humor conquered us in Silicon Valley on HBO.
Sersi (Gemma Chan)
British actress and former model Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), plays Sersi, an eternal with the ability to manipulate non-sensitive matter, and who differs from the rest in that it feels a true love and respect for humanity. So much so that he works in a museum. He has a very special connection with Ikaris, with whom he has had a complicated and intermittent relationship over the centuries, but also with the character played by Kit Harrington.
Sprite (Lia McHugh)
In the comics Sprite was a male character, a descendant of the original Eternals created by the Celestials, but for the movie she is a girl. He has total control over his molecular structures, he is practically indestructible and extraordinarily skilled in the use of illusions. And although her appearance is that of a girl, she is a character with thousands of years, like the rest of Eternals. She is played by Lia McHugh (Totem).
Thena (Angelina Jolie)
Angelina Jolie has immersed herself in the world of superheroes when playing Thena. In the comics, she is the daughter of de Zuras, leader of the Eternals, and is immune to the passage of time and disease. She was born in ancient Greece and the city of Athens was named after her. According to the comics during the Vietnam War from her secret relationship with Kro, leader of the Deviants, the twins were born.
In the comics Thena can manipulate cosmic energy, which allows her to create weapons such as a golden spear, and is an excellent warrior in addition to having super speed, super strength and also being able to fly.
Ajak (Salma Hayek)
The first time this character was featured in the comics, in the second volume of Los Eternos, he did so as a man who was worshiped in Central America. For the Aztecs they were Quetzalcoatl, while the Incas identified him as Tecumotzin, the Lord of Flight. Now she is a female character whom she will give life Salma Hayek.
She is one of the leaders and is able to feel an energy shift after the Hulk recovers half of Earth’s population in Avengers: Endgame. It will sound the alarm that the Deviants return and is able to communicate with the Celestials in addition to having the power of healing.
Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry)
In the comics Phastos has a mysterious background and is known to be a genius capable of creating weapons and technology with his powers. Due to the character’s ability to manipulate cosmic energy, he can also create illusions and wield a hammer. In the film he is portrayed by Brian Tyree Henry (Godzilla vs. Kong).
Phastos’s character is also openly homosexual, which would make him one of the few superheroes LGBTIQ + confirmed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Gilgamesh (Don Lee)
Don Lee (Train to Busan) is the actor who will play Gilgamesh, a character who in the comics became an outcast of the Eternals when Zuras decreed that he had meddled too much in the mortal world. He was called “The Forgotten One” and possesses a series of superhuman abilities that he has trained far beyond, which makes him the strongest of the Eternals. He has a deep connection to Thena and prefers to use his fists in battle.
Makkari (Lauren Ridloff)
Again it is a character that in the comics is masculine and that here has taken a feminine form. Son of Verón and Mara and born in Greece, he is one of the eternal technologists, like Phastos. His passion for speed led him to apply science to design various high-speed transport vessels.
Besides being now a female character, Makkari is the first deaf hero in the MCU.. The fastest character of all, and the greatest speedster in the Marvel Universe, will be played by actress Lauren Ridloff (Sound of metal).
Druig (Barry Keoghan)
Druig, played by Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) is the son of Valkin and cousin of Ikaris, and has the ability to manipulate the thoughts of others. In the comics he is a distant and lonely character with a tendency to inflict pain on others. He can manipulate cosmic energy like Sersi, cause energy blasts, fly, and teleport, just as seen in the comics.
Kit Harrington as Black Knight
It is not an eternal, but Kit harrington It will not be a secondary in Chloé Zhao’s film. He will play Dane Whitman, a physicist who takes on the role of the Black Knight, a hero who began in the comics with Sir Percy of Scandia in medieval times. He wields the Ebony Blade, a mystical sword, and has great melee and strategy skills. And he is the third in contention in the love triangle with Sersi and Ikaris.
