Which one is better to buy? Tips and Recommendations

The spirals or vegetable spaghetti They are an original, fast and healthy way to consume more vegetables and eliminate the craving for pasta, considerably reducing calories and adding many more vitamins and fiber. Although they are already easy to find in the supermarket, it will be much cheaper to make them homemade with a spiralizer, and we can also choose from a wide variety of vegetables making the most of their freshness.

Back in 2013 we already presented in Direct to the Palate a recipe for “fake pasta” with zucchini ribbons, so this supposed new trend isn’t really all that new. Cut the vegetables into thin julienne strips, strips or ribbons that can mimic the look of pasta Italian or Asian is something that professional chefs have been doing for a long time, playing a bit with the concept of trompe l’oeil, textures and presentation.

Yes they have become more fashionable as a healthy, light and fit for cut down on refined carbohydrates or enjoy more fun vegetable dishes, or, at least, more original to the routine ones. Although it is possible to imitate the shape of vegetable pasta with a knife, a vegetable peeler, or a mandolin, the spiralizers they are a much more practical and faster tool, with more precise results.

Invented the contraption for the first time in Japan, today we find all kinds of models, sizes and prices, with a multitude of different functions. Choosing a spiralizer with so many offers can be a bit dizzy, so we hope that this guide will help you find the model that best suits your needs -and budget-.

What to consider before choosing a spiralizer

  • Design. There are more compact and manual, pencil sharpeners, much simpler, more comfortable and less mess, although less versatile. The more bulky models are also more complete, with more sets of blades and cutters, and they usually promise to be able to cut a more variety of vegetables, taking more advantage of the product; These consist of a mechanism with a crank, like old apple peelers, placing the fixed piece between two ends.

  • Size. Derived from the previous point we will have larger or more compact spiralizers. There is a risk of forgetting the utensil in a closet if it is too bulky and it is difficult for us to get the desire to use it, while the reduced models fit in any drawer and are more attractive to use, although they offer less versatility.

Spiralizer
  • Stability and solidity. This is a crucial aspect in large models with a fixed base, as the idea is to be able to position the vegetable and cut it by turning a crank. If it is not strong, solid and stable, it will be difficult for us to remove the spirals from the hardest products, running the risk of breaking even the device. The more stable it is, the more regular and uncut spirals it will also be able to produce with long strips and without wasting pulp.

  • Materials. They also influence that solidity, although in general all these contraptions use a hard plastic body and stainless steel blades. If they offer special guarantees on their quality and finishes, they will score points. Flimsy or very light plastic does not offer many guarantees of withstanding continued use over time.

  • Electric or manual motor. An electric spiralizer will be bigger, more expensive and more cumbersome, but also more efficient and much simpler and more convenient to use. They also usually have a storage tank, although some models do not have the capacity to adapt to certain very fibrous vegetables or soft fruits, and they usually require smaller pieces.

  • Ease of use and cleaning. Such a specific device needs to be easy to handle so that we do not banish it to the storage room. Its operation should be intuitive and simple, that it does not present risks of cuts or accidents, and also easy to disassemble and clean. It is an aspect in which they tend to fail, since they often force to disassemble all their parts to wash them by hand, since bits of food remain on the blades or tanks.

Spiralizer
  • Ambidextrous use. Obviously we will not care if we are right-handed, but left-handed people should take into account that not all spiralizers adapt to both uses, and can be really complicated to use if they are only aimed at a right-handed user.

  • Multifunction. While different blade sets are welcome, don’t be blinded by a glut of extra accessories. In the end, the most interesting thing is the spiral or noodle cut, the exact thickness being somewhat irrelevant at the end of the day. Unless we are really creative and love the added features, or are looking for a very specific format, it is not a relevant aspect to consider.
