As is known, the League Cup 2023 is about to start on July 21, being a competition in which all the teams from the MX League and the MLS. The Leagues Cup 2023 there were modifications and a total of 47 teams will participate, with 29 teams from MLS and 18 teams from Liga MX. This tournament will also serve as the qualification process for the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League. The competition will be made up of 15 groups, each made up of three teams. In these groups, 45 of the 47 participating teams will be distributed, while the teams LAFC, MLS champion, and Pachuca, Apertura 2022 champion and with the most points in the season, will advance directly to the round of 32.
The 15 groups will be divided into zones and subdivided into regions, with the goal of ensuring a competitive balance based on the teams’ ranking in their respective leagues throughout the year 2022. During the group stage, each team will play two matches, and in the event of a tie, each team will be awarded one point, but a penalty shootout will be held to determine the winner of an additional point. The top two teams in each group will advance to the next phase, the round of 32.
It should be remembered that in the edition of 2019, the winner was Cruz Azul, while León took the title in 2021. It is important to note that at that time, the competition had a different structure, since only the four best clubs in each league participated.
When does the Leagues Cup 2023 start?
The Group Phase of the Leagues Cup 2023 will start on Friday, July 21 and will end on August 1. Subsequently, the quarterfinals will take place on August 11-12, followed by the semifinals on August 15.
