Canned cans are a very good option when we do not have time or we are going on a trip. Even so, the fact that it is an option that we can use occasionally does not mean that we do not have to take the best options.
Next, we tell you what we have to take into account when taking a canned food.
What do we have to take into account?
Oil
The first thing we have to take into account is the canning liquid. preferably, and in order not to increase the calories, it would be preferable that the liquid be water with salt. If you want to include some oil to improve the flavor, we can add the one we want and consider appropriate.
In the event that it is not possible to choose the food in salted water and that there is only oil as the preserving liquid, it is important that we choose, among all the oils, olive oil, and if it can be virgin or extra virgin, much better.
It would be advisable not to consume other types of vegetable oils such as sunflower, rapeseed, etc., since it has been shown that consuming this type of oil in high quantities, could increase physiological inflammatory levels.
Salt
Salt, per se, is not bad; in fact, sodium fulfills vital functions. Normally, this type of canned food usually has large amounts of salt and, if so much salt is consumed for a long time, it could cause cardiovascular problems, hypertension, etc.
Therefore, when buying this type of product, it would be convenient to buy the cans that have the least amount of salt. If, even looking closely at the quantity, and we have no other option than to buy the high-salt cans, what we can do is pass it through water and remove as much of it as possible.
Marinade
Pickling is a method of preserving that, normally and to reduce costs, always includes sunflower oil.
As we have mentioned before, sunflower oil is a type of oil that we should avoid or, at least, reduce its consumption to the maximum. If we have to choose between marinade and olive oil, the ideal is to choose olive oil.
Product Quantity
It is preferable to buy small cans than to buy a large can. And these are the reasons:
- Buying small cans makes us aware of the exact amount of the product that we are consuming. This will make us control more the calories that we are consuming, and more if the canning liquid is oil.
- When you open these products, they spoil quickly, so if you don’t want to throw food away, small cans are much better.

Within canned products, there are better options than others; and not for health, but for calories.
For example, within the fish, choose between tuna or mackerel, it would be preferable to choose tuna if we are in a process of losing fat. On the other hand, if we are looking to gain muscle mass, it is preferable to choose mackerel because it is a fatty fish and has a higher amount of calories.
