On March 25 of this year it will be possible to observe a lunar eclipse from some parts of the world, specifically it is the phenomenon called penumbral eclipsewhich, according to NASA, is not easily perceived, they detail from National Geographic.
On the site, they added that four to seven times a year, the Earth, the Moon and the Sun align perfectly to create a shadow show or, what we know as an eclipse.
According to NASA, lunar eclipses occur during the Full Moon phase, when the Earth is located exactly between the Moon and the Sun, and the planet’s shadow covers the satellite. In the case of penumbral lunar eclipsethe Moon passes through the Earth’s penumbra, that is, the outer and weak part of the shadow generated by the planet.
During this phenomenon, the Moon darkens so slightly that it can be difficult to see it.
Is a penumbral lunar eclipse the same as a blood eclipse?
There are different types of eclipse, but among the most similar are the penumbral and the blood one that may look a bit alike.
Unlike the penumbral, the blood eclipse, as the total lunar eclipse is known, is more evident.
According to NASA, this phenomenon occurs when the Moon enters the inner part of the Earth’s shadow, or umbra, completely covering the satellite. This is when the part of the sunlight that passes through the Earth’s atmosphere hits the surface of the Moon, illuminating it weakly and leaving it an orange-red color.
Due to its color, the eclipse can also be called a Blood Moon.
